Day 1 of the Captains Draft Minor LAN Finals and making sense of the scheduling is a handful. Apparently, the tournament organisers, MoonduckTV, decided to go with a GSL format. The format is essentially a double-elimination bracket where the four teams in each group will play each other in best-of-one matches to determine seeding for the playoffs.
So yeah, you guessed it right. Things are about to get pretty wild.
Having said that, we took our sweet time to give you the winning picks for the best-of-one matchups for the Captains Draft Minor LAN Finals tomorrow.
Team Secret vs Team Empire
— Team Secret (@teamsecret) January 3, 2018
New flash, Puppey is good at drafting.
Sarcasm aside, Team Secret have this series and the entire group in the bag. They’re just too good and too versatile to let a game slip, especially up against the likes of Team Empire, Mineski, and ViCi Gaming. Additionally, of those playing in the Captains Draft Valve Minor, Team Secret are one of the only three teams captained by someone who has won the unique tournament before. This alone speaks volume when it comes to how much of an advantage they have.
Somewhere out there, Clement ‘Puppey‘ Ivanov is smiling.
OG vs paiN Gaming
— Tal Aizik (@Fly_dota2) January 3, 2018
While OG haven’t exactly been in the best form lately, it’s highly unlikely they’ll lose to paiN Gaming. The Brazilian squad are just not that good of a team. To make matters worse, they’re playing with a substitute in Arthur ‘PAADA‘ Zarzur, who is actually the owner of the organization and is 3 years removed from his last professional Dota 2 game.
Plus, it’s not like OG doesn’t have a history of winning the Captains Draft — Johan ‘N0tail‘ Sundstein have won it twice, while both Gustav ‘s4‘ Magnusson and Tal ‘Fly‘ Aizik each have won the tournament at least once.
It’s safe to say that the odds are stacked against paiN Gaming.
Mineski vs ViCi Gaming
— Mineski Pro Team (@MineskiProTeam) January 3, 2018
This is a tough match to call. Because while ViCi Gaming have been one of the most versatile Dota 2 teams this season, Mineski are an enigma; they’re known for being one-sided, but their players don’t exactly have a shallow hero pool, so they can be versatile when the situation calls for it.
If you’re picking a match primed for an upset, this is it. Mineski have the tools necessary to take out ViCi Gaming, especially in a best-of-one.
Evil Geniuses vs CompLexity Gaming
— Evil Geniuses (@EvilGeniuses) January 2, 2018
This is an easy call.
While Syed Sumail ‘SumaiL‘ Hassan might initially show some rust as he adjusts to life in the offlane, his shortcomings won’t be enough to bite them against a team like CompLexity Gaming. Because, not only are Evil Geniuses captained by Rasmus ‘MiSeRy‘ Filipsen, who won XMG Captains Draft 2.0 back in 2014 with Team Secret, but the team won the most recent Captains Draft tournament back in 2016 with their core intact.
To further stack the odds in Evil Geniuses’ favour, Clinton ‘Fear‘ Loomis, who recently moved back to the position 2 role, is one of the most versatile players in the history of Dota 2.
