North America’s Vinny “Vinny1x” Gilgan won the Solo tournament that took up the Day 1 of ESL Katowice. The win was surprising, as after 7 games Vinny1x had not actually secured a victory royale. Vinny1x starts his weekend with a $20,000 win with the potential to add to that as he heads into today’s Duo tournament where he will compete with Zexrow.
Team Solomid, who signed Vinny1x the day before the tournament, will be delighted. The organization has struggled in Fortnite under the tutelage of team captain Ali “Myth” Kabbani who again performed poorly here. There has been accusations that their players, like Daequan and Hamlinz, are more interested in being streamers than real professional players and so they will be delighted to get their first major win and will be hoping this signals a change in fortunes for their Fortnite outfit.
It was a tournament with an international flavour, with players from North America, EU and South Korea and Japan after Vinny, the top 3 was rounded out by Team Atlantis Max “Magin” Merrien and Team Solary’s Huynh “Kinstaar” Duong Huynh. Both accomplished EU players.
Timothy “Bizzle” Miller of Ghost Gaming also performed well and set the pace early on with a win in Game 1. Dying early in the final game put him out the running for a podium finish but after his win in last weekends Secret Skirmish he must surely be considered one of the best players in the game. He walked away with $8,000 and will team up with regular duo partner DMO for tomorrow’s Duo tournament.
Vinny1x Wins First Season 8 Tournament
The release of Season 8 happened the day before the start of the tournament. A common tactic for Epic, the thinking being that a big tournament with the best players in the game and lots of people watching is the best way to advertise the new season. This hasn’t always gone to plan though, in the past we’ve had meta-breaking additions to the game like the infinity blade, aeroplanes and map changes that have caused players to bug out.
It seems like with Season 8 Epic have learned their lesson. Aeroplanes were removed, which improved the competitive game, and most of the newest additions were cosmetic. The only real change was the Cannonball, which proved to be a useful mobility item while still having a drawback. Once you fired yourself from it you couldn’t change your trajectory.
Compared to past season changes this one was a success.
