TI8 Main Event Day 3: Odds, Analyses, Predictions - Esportsranks
TI8 Main Event Day 3: Odds, Analyses, Predictions

The action will continue with the TI8 main event Day 3, where old teammates and heavyweights will face off in the upper brackets and at least two teams being eliminated at the end of the day.

Whereas Day 1 of the The International 2018 was full of upsets, Day 2 was pretty much par for the course. Although OG taking out VGJ.Storm via a sweep and securing their highest placement at a TI just yet might not exactly be how most people expected their upper bracket matchup would turn out to be.

Either way, we’re probably all the better for it. Because, now, OG are set to face off against Evil Geniuses in a battle of former teammates.

Then, from a drama-filled affair, we’ll also be treated to a heavyweight tilt between Team Liquid and PSG.LGD. So far, these two Dota 2 teams appear evenly matched, going 5-4 in their games (in favor of PSG.LGD) since February of 2018.

Two more teams will also face elimination tomorrow in the TI8 main event Day 3, leaving us with only 8 Dota 2 teams remaining once the dust settles at the end of the day.

The stakes are only going to get higher from this point on, and we’ve got just exactly what you need to help you pick out which teams are going to walk out as the victors tomorrow.

TI8 Main Event Day 3: Lower Bracket

VGJ.Storm vs Winstrike

TI8 Main Event Day 3

From being on the brink of elimination to being one step closer to securing a Top 8 finish, Winstrike have defied all expectations heading into the TI8 main event Day 3. (Valve)

Match Schedule: August 23, 0100H (UTC+8)

VGJ.Storm’s draft penality will be lifted tomorrow, which means their drafts should get better. Against OG, while their draft was okay, they kind of drafted themselves into a bit of a corner, lacking the disable for Phantom Lancer in Game 1 and generally just being countered in Game 2. That probably won’t happen against Winstrike.

Does this mean that Winstrike will have no chance at all? Not exactly. From what we’ve seen from the CIS underdogs so far, it’s that they thrive under the pressure of the bright lights and playing in front of the crowd.

That makes Winstrike a very dangerous opponent who could rely solely on momentum to carry them over and win them the game.

With the outcome extremely hard to predict, we’re going with the pick that this series is likely going to go to a final and decisive Game 3.

Betting: Odd at Odd/Even Maps at 2.15 odds (GGbet).

Team Secret vs ViCi Gaming

TI8 Main Event Day 3

Finding themselves in yet another elimination game this early on in the tournament for the second year in a row, Team Secret will be looking to flip the script and secure a Top 8 finish tomorrow in the TI8 main event Day 3. (Valve)

Match Schedule: August 23, 0400H (UTC+8)

Team Secret just couldn’t seem to get anything going against Evil Geniuses in their upper bracket matchup. Now, they’re set to face off against their Chinese equivalent in the form of ViCi Gaming in the TI8 main event Day 3.

Equally unpredictable and willing to experiment, ViCi Gaming have mostly had Team Secret’s number this season, but have always lost when it counted the most. Case in point, their matchups in the lower brackets of the China Dota2 Supermajor and further back, the Grand Finals of the Captain’s Draft Minor back in January, which ended in Team Secret’s favour.

That says a lot about how badly ViCi Gaming deal with pressure, and with the stakes never been higher, we’re taking Team Secret, a squad led by the veteran and TI1 champion, Clement ‘Puppey‘ Ivanov.

Betting: Team Secret to win at 1.72 odds (GGbet).

TI8 Main Event Day 3: Upper Bracket

Team Liquid vs PSG.LGD

TI8 Main Event Day 3

Nearly impossible to out draft, the key to beating to Team Liquid is to outplay them, which is much easier said than done. (Team Liquid)

Match Schedule: August 23, 0700H (UTC+8)

Most people probably have mixed feelings about this matchup. On one hand, we’re sure that we’re going to get quite a treat as these are some of the two best teams this season. On the other hand, it’s not the Grand Finals, nor the upper bracket finals. Not even the lower bracket finals.

Either way, we should be just happy that we’re going to see some high quality dotes between these two magnificent teams.

As for who we think is going to win, our money’s on Team Liquid.

Unlike PSG.LGD, the reigning champions have remained dominant, with very few lapses in performance throughout TI8. They’re also riding an 11-game winstrike heading into the TI8 main event Day 3, which suggests that momentum is on their side.

Unlike last year where we saw Team Liquid make their way through the lower brackets to win it all, we’ll probably see them try to defend their title comfortably from the upper brackets all the way.

Betting: Team Liquid to win at 1.64 odds (GGbet).

OG vs Evil Geniuses

TI8 Main Event Day 3

Fly has proven to be exactly just what Evil Geniuses needed to help bring together their star-studded roster. (Valve)

Match Schedule: August 23, 1000H (UTC+8)

Sloppy. That’s one way to describe OG’s performance against VGJ.Storm, even though they did win.

Losing the laning phase hard in Game 1 was a mistake that could’ve easily doomed them had it not been for VGJ.Storm’s shortcomings. In Game 2, they held their own during the laning stage and even came out ahead, but still gave away a number of free kills.

Of course, OG’s wins mostly have come from sloppy plays, which begs to wonder if their weird drafting and play style causes the opposing team play sloppy. If that’s the case, we’re not buying their chances. Not against a team as disciplined as Evil Geniuses.

Lane dominators who know when to push their advantage and when to back off, Evil Geniuses will punish every mistake OG will make and not allow them to get a head of steam to pull off another upset in the TI8 main event Day 3.

Betting: Yes to Correct Score (0:2) In Maps in favor of Evil Geniuses at 2.04 odds. (GGbet)
