TI8 Group Stage Day 4: Odds, Analyses, Predictions

The TI8 Group Stage Day 4 will be the final day of the group stage, where every remaining game counts, especially for Winstrike, and the bottom-half teams in the tightly-contested Group B.

So much for our controversial pick.

Just when we thought Evil Geniuses were firmly ahead of the pack, Team Liquid reminded us that they remain the best Dota 2 team in the world. They dominated the Group A leaders and showed their true colors as the monsters that they really are with a 2-0 sweep of Evil Geniuses.

With such a dominating performance, nobody is going to dare mess with Team Liquid and tell them about the 39-1 drubbing they received at the hands of Fnatic earlier in Day 1 of the group stage.

Moving on, as we head into the TI8 group stage Day 4, the team most in peril is Winstrike. At 3-11, the CIS squad now face the tall task of splitting even against OG, a team who surged up the standings earlier in Day 3, going from 3-5 to 8-6 in a single day, by feasting on the opportunity to play teams that are more or less their equal.

Should Winstrike take at least a game off of OG, they’ll have to chance to play in the main event via a tiebreaker against Invictus Gaming. Even better would be if they went 2-0. However, judging from how they’re playing, they’re more likely to get swept instead of them doing the sweeping.

With only a handful of games left for the TI8 group stage Day 4, here are our predictions of how the last day before the main event will turn out.

VGJ.Storm vs Team Serenity

TI8 Group Stage Day 4

Never one to be afraid to experiment, Avery ‘SVG’ Silverman will probably throw in a wild pick against Team Serenity tomorrow as they set their eyes towards their heavyweight tilt against Virtus.Pro later in the day. (Team VGJ)

Match Schedule: August 19, 0000H (UTC + 8)

With VGJ.Storm already guaranteed of a spot in the upper bracket of the main event and with Virtus.Pro for them to prepare for later in the day, you can’t blame them for slacking off for a game in their first series of the day against Team Serenity.

That, paired with the fact that Team Serenity find themselves in a do-or-die situation, means that this series is likely to end either in a draw or a sweep in their favor.

Betting: VGJ.Storm vs Team Serenity to draw at 2.2 odds. (GGbet)

OpTic Gaming vs paiN Gaming

TI8 Group Stage Day 4

W33 might be the superstar of the team, but it is the friendship and chemistry between Otávio ‘Tavo’ Gabriel and Danylo ‘Kingrd’ Nascimento that helps bind this paiN Gaming squad together. (paiN Gaming)

Match Schedule: August 19, 0000H (UTC + 8)

So far, paiN Gaming have managed to break even against everyone they have faced so far — including Virtus.Pro — except for VGJ.Storm. That speaks a lot about how well the Brazilians plus Aliwi ‘w33‘ Omar are playing right now.

Up against a disappointing OpTic Gaming squad, who sits on the bottom of the standings with a 4-8 record, paiN Gaming have a fair shot at going for a tie and vaulting themselves up further into the standings.

Betting: OpTic Gaming vs paiN Gaming to draw at 1.94 odds. (GGbet)

Evil Geniuses vs Fnatic

TI8 Group Stage Day 4

The play of Djardel Jicko B. ‘DJ’ Mampusti in the TI8 group stage Day 4 will be instrumental to Fnatic’s success and their chances of securing an upper bracket spot in the main event. (Fnatic)

Match Schedule: August 19, 0230H (UTC +8)

The last time these two Dota 2 teams met, Evil Geniuses absolutely destroyed Fnatic with a 3-0 sweep in the Grand Finals of the Dota Summit 9.

Of course, that was already almost a month ago, and from what we’ve seen, Fnatic are a much better team now. But, so are Evil Geniuses, who are primed to finish in one of the top two spots of Group A after looking nearly unstoppable before being put in their place by Team Liquid.

Considering that Fnatic were responsible for giving Team Liquid the biggest stomp in Dota 2 history, we know that we can’t count them out just yet. Additionally, given the possibility that Evil Geniuses will try and experiment — like try to counter Abed Azel ‘Abed‘ Yusop and his Meepo — it’s worth risking for this series to go 50/50.

Betting: Evil Geniuses vs Fnatic to draw at 2.18 odds. (GGbet)

Mineski vs PSG.LGD

TI8 Group Stage Day 4

If Chai ‘Mushi’ Yee Fung picks up his play, Mineski will have a good chance of sweeping PSG.LGD in the TI8 group stage Day 4. (Mineski)

Match Schedule: August 19, 0230H (UTC +8)

At this point, betting on Mineski feels like throwing away money.

The 2018 DAC champions have played less like a team who’s hungry to win and more like a team who’s just happy to play at a TI. The lack of urgency is alarming, considering how teams coached by Tang ‘71‘ Wenyi are supposed to be playing to win at all times.

Maybe they’re playing possum? Who knows. But, what we do know is that the odds of them sweeping PSG.LGD in what is a must-win matchup for them to inch closer to an upper bracket spot are too good to pass up on.

Betting: Mineski to win 2-0 at 8.88 odds. (GGbet)

ViCi Gaming vs OpTic Gaming

TI8 Group Stage Day 4

OpTic Gaming find themselves in an unenviable position heading into the TI8 group stage Day 4 as every one of their remaining games are a must-win if they want to survive and make it into the playoffs. (OpTic Gaming)

Match Schedule: August 19, 0500H (UTC +8)

Depending on how their earlier matches turn out, this particular matchup could end up deciding whether or not they’ll be making their way to the main event or not.

If it ends up being a non-bearing matchup, bet on the team that’s already guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. Otherwise, expect OpTic Gaming to pull out all of the stops and put Neta ‘33‘ Shapira in a position to succeed and carry them to victory, as he has so many times earlier this season.

Betting: OpTic Gaming to win 2-0 at 4.67 odds. (GGbet)

Virtus.Pro vs VGJ.Storm

TI8 Group Stage Day 4

Considered one of the most prolific playmaking supports today, we have yet to see the same kind of performance that earned him the MVP trophy from ESL One Katowice 2018 from Vladimir ‘RodjER’ Nikogosyan. (Virtus.Pro)

Match Schedule: August 19, 0500H (UTC +8)

The final matchup of the TI8 group stage Day 4 and easily the day’s most anticipated series, this heavyweight tilt could go either way. After all, Virtus.Pro aren’t exactly looking like the dominant team that we all know that they could be — they’ve never been one for saving strategies either, which makes their slightly subpar performance during the group stage slightly surprising.

Then again, we could’ve said that same for Team Liquid, and they showed us that they were merely warming up.

Think of our pick for this particular matchup as our way of making up for doubting Team Liquid, because we definitely won’t be making the same mistake twice.

Betting: Virtus.Pro to win 2-0 at 2.15 odds. (GGbet)
