TI8 Group Stage Day 2: Odds, Analyses, Predictions

With Day 1 of TI8 now done and dusted, we will now move on to the TI8 Group Stage Day 2, where the presumptive best Dota 2 team in the world, Virtus.Pro, will finally have a chance to flex their muscles.

Day 1 of the competition saw a fair share of our predictions come true. On the other hand, some didn’t, and we also saw a number of upsets as well. Case in point, Fnatic’s Game 2 win against the reigning TI champions, Team Liquid, where they set the record for the biggest stomp in the history of competitive Dota 2 with a 39-1 drubbing of Team Liquid that ended in just 31 minutes.

You’d best expect that we’ll see more of the same shenanigans in the TI8 Group Stage Day 2 and beyond.

With all that said, below are our predictions for the TI8 Group Stage Day 2.

TNC Predator vs paiN Gaming

TI8 Group Stage Day 2

No strangers to being underdogs, TNC Predator are now expected to win big this TI8. (TNC Pro Team)

Match Schedule: August 17, 0000H (UTC + 8)

Expect this to be one of the more high-octane games of the TI8 Group Stage Day 2. Both teams are known for not exactly being shy of diving towers and taking the necessary risks, for better or for worse. But, while aggression runs in the blood of both of these teams, it is TNC Predator who has had more experience playing together. Not only that, but they have also shown themselves to be the more disciplined team.

The ability to know when to dive and when to go back can be the difference-maker in this particular series and help TNC Predator net themselves a 2-0 win.

Betting: TNC Predator to win 2-0 at 2.78 odds (GGbet)

ViCi Gaming vs Newbee

TI8 Group Stage Day 2

Damien ‘kpii’ Chok has been a standout performer for Newbee so far and is second in the tournament with a KDA of 8.78 in 4 games. (Newbee)

Match Schedule: August 17, 0000H (UTC + 8)

ViCi Gaming and Newbee are 8-7 in series this season, suggesting that both Dota 2 teams are quite even. But so far, we’ve seen ViCi Gaming drop winnable games against opponents that they should be beating, with their cores holding a lot more money than they should be even without buyback. As a result of their lacklustre performance, they went 0-4 to end the day. On the other hand, Newbee are playing extremely well, going 3-1.

As evenly matched as these Dota 2 teams have been so far this season, it’s easy to see which team came to TI8 to play.

Betting: Newbee to win 2-0 at 2.69 odds (GGbet)

PSG.LGD vs Winstrike

TI8 Group Stage Day 2

While they are no strangers to aggression themselves, PSG.LGD might find themselves on the backfoot against the hyper-aggressive squad that is Winstrike. (PSG eSports)

Match Schedule: August 17, 0230H (UTC+8)

Winstrike are heavy underdogs against PSG.LGD, as they should be. PSG.LGD are one of the best Dota 2 teams in the world. But, lest we forget, Winstrike were very close to securing a matchup against PSG.LGD in the Grand Finals of EPICENTER XL, and if that matchup had indeed happened, Winstrike would’ve had a fair chance against the two-time Major champions.

One of the true wildcards of the tournament, Winstrike should be able to squeak away with at least one win against PSG.LGD.

Betting: PSG.LGD vs Winstrike to draw at 2.58 odds (GGbet)

TNC Predator vs Virtus.Pro

TI8 Group Stage Day 2

The heavy favourites of the tournament, Virtus.Pro could find themselves dropping one game against TNC Predator, a team that has pretty much the same playstyle as they do. (Virtus.Pro)

Match Schedule: August 17, 0500H (UTC+8)

What better team to replicate a style from than the best in the world? TNC Predator have long been known to emulate Virtus.Pro’s playstyle. Whether that’s intentional or not, we’ll never know, but what we do know is that they have all the necessary tools to go even against the CIS bears during the laning phase, which should give them a fair shot at winning the game if it manages to go late.

While Virtus.Pro should be to good to lose and get swept by TNC Predator, it is possible that they’ll drop at least one game against the best-of-one specialists.

Betting: TNC Pro Team vs Virtus.Pro to draw at 2.73 odds (GGbet)

OpTic Gaming vs TNC Predator

TI8 Group Stage Day 2

OpTic Gaming’s superior decision making will be key if they are to sweep TNC Predator in their matchup tomorrow. (OpTic Gaming)

Match Schedule: August 17, 1000H (UTC+8)

Considering that TNC Predator are essentially Virtus.Pro-lite, Peter ‘ppd‘ Dager and his squad should have a hard time against them. But, they don’t, and it’s all because of how OpTic Gaming excel during the mid-game and late-game, which are key weaknesses that TNC Predator have been trying to improve all season long.

Expect OpTic Gaming to walk away with a sweep against TNC Predator in this particular matchup.

Betting: OpTic Gaming to go 2-0 at 2.78 odds (GGbet)

VGJ.Storm vs paiN Gaming

TI8 Group Stage Day 2

VGJ.Storm will head into the TI8 Group Stage Day 2 as the standout performers of the tournament so far. (Team VGJ)

Match Schedule: August 17, 1000H (UTC+8)

VGJ.Storm have easily been one of the best performing teams of the tournament so far, having yet to drop a single game. Meanwhile, paiN Gaming have done as well as they could have hoped for.

Playing around Roman ‘Resolut1on‘ Fominok has been a fool-proof strategy so far, and considering that William ‘hFn‘ Medeiros is not nearly as prolific of a carry to do the same for paiN Gaming, we can expect this meeting of former teammates in Resolut1on and Aliwi ‘w33‘ Omar to end relatively quickly.

Betting: VGJ.Storm to win 2-0 at 2.04 odds (GGbet)

ViCi Gaming vs Team Secret

TI8 Group Stage Day 2

Clement ‘Puppey’ Ivanov and Team Secret have been the less disappointing team when compared to ViCi Gaming. (Valve)

Match Schedule: August 17, 1000H (UTC+8)

A battle between two teams who have been recently underperforming, this series could easily go either way. Both, after all, are known to be wildly inconsistent, and boast incredibly high ceilings as far as level of play goes.

Then again, when you consider the quality of losses Team Secret have suffered, they were right there in every game. Meanwhile, ViCi Gaming have squandered leads and lost early in the game, both indications that the Chinese powerhouse didn’t exactly come in prepared to play their best at TI8.

Betting: Team Secret to win 2-0 at 2.57 odds (GGbet)
