TI7 Americas Qualifiers Day 1 Proves to be as Crazy as Expected

The TI7 Americas Qualifiers Day 1 proved to be as tightly contested as most people expected.

The top teams from each region boast similar records and none have, so far, proven themselves capable of pulling away from the rest of the pack.

NA Regional Qualifiers

As with the other regions, the NA Regional Qualifiers will be split into two phases.

In Phase 1, all qualified teams play in a round-robin format of BO1 matches. The top seed will earn the right to play at TI7. Meanwhile, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th seeds will move on to Phase 2 for another chance to earn a spot at TI7.

In Phase 2, all qualified teams will play out BO3 matches in a Double Elimination Bracket. The Grand Finals will be a BO5, where the winner qualifies for The International 2017.

With Evil Geniuses out of the way, Team NP and Planet Odd’s recent LAN performances hinted that they would be the favourites to take the top spot. That, however, has not been the case. Digital Chaos, with their 10K MMR player, Abed Azel ‘Abed’ Yusop, has proven that they belong in the conversation as well.

Digital Chaos finished the TI7 Americas Qualifiers day 1 with a similar record to Team NP at 4 wins and 1 loss.

Rounding out the top 4 are Planet Odd and Team Freedom, each have 3 wins and 1 loss.

While the top speed from NA’s Regional qualifiers will go on to play at TI7 directly, the road to TI7 for SA’s teams are slightly different.

Phase 1 of the SA qualifiers works the same way. All qualified teams still play against each other in BO1 matches in a round-robin format. However, because they only have one slot, the top speed will not go directly to TI7. Instead, all top 4 teams from the group stages will advance to Phase 2.

Whoever wins the BO5 Grand Finals of Phase 2 will then play at Seattle later this August.

So far, after day 1, Midas Club Elite lead the top four teams of the SA regional qualifiers with a 5-0 record. The rest, Stars, SG e-Sports, and Infamous, are all 3-1.

SA’s qualifying teams have a steep climb ahead of them. Whoever ends up winning the tightly contested TI7 spot will definitely have deserved their slot at TI7.
