The Kuala Lumpur Major Playoffs Day 2: Odds, Analysis, Predictions

The Kuala Lumpur Major Playoffs Day 2 will pick up where Day 1 left off with two more teams on the brink of elimination to shrink the number of participating teams from 14 down to 12.

With the playoffs completely underway, stakes have been raised to the absolute maximum as teams are no longer just fighting for seeding, but their very tournament lives.

That was exactly what happened on Day 1 of the Kuala Lumpur Major. Two teams said goodbye and bid the first Dota 2 Major of the 2018-19 Dota Pro Circuit adieu. Tigers, who had recently just won the DreamLeague Season 10 minor, showed obvious signs of fatigue. Just days after hoisting a trophy, they were just a shell of their title winning selves. The other team, paiN Gaming, also fell way short of playing at their usual standards. TNC Predator, who had only won 1 map throughout the tournament until then, took less than 25 minutes to eliminate them.

Tomorrow, in the Kuala Lumpur Major Playoffs Day 2, two more teams will do the same as four more matches will take place, with two of those happening in the lower brackets with a chance to stay in the tournament for one more day on the line.

The Kuala Lumpur Major Playoffs Day 2 Predictions

Evil Geniuses vs Ninjas in Pyjamas

Kuala Lumpur Major Playoffs Day 2

Fly has whipped the boys in blue into shape and has had them playing some of the best dota of their lives. (Evil Geniuses)

Match Schedule: November 12, 2018 — 1300H SGT

As the person who arguably kick started the powerhouse that is Evil Geniuses, Peter ‘ppd‘ Dager knows all too well what makes his former team tick. That’s why he was able to win more often than not last season against the boys in blue, even when he had fewer tools at his disposal. This season, he’s got a plethora of cheese strategies to work with, which should give him a better chance against Evil Geniuses.

At least, that’s what the most optimistic of fans would say. Unfortunately, the reality is, Evil Geniuses don’t just have a more talented squad this time around, but they’ve also been more successful, getting a Top 3 finish at TI8 most recently and are currently one of the most stylistically favoured teams in this “win lanes, win games” meta.

While Ninjas in Pyjamas do indeed have a chance to pull off an upset, don’t count on it unless Evil Geniuses slip up for two games in a row.

Betting: Correct Score 2:0 (IN MAPS) at 1.69 odds. (GGbet)

Virtus.Pro vs Fnatic

Kuala Lumpur Major Playoffs Day 2

Even with Anucha ‘Jabz’ Jirawong playing out of position and as a captain for the first time in his career, Fnatic have found a way to make their ultra-talented lineup gel and work. (Fnatic)

Match Schedule: November 12, 2018 — 1600H SGT

Fnatic have played as well as expected of them so far. They’ve beaten the teams they’re supposed to beat, and lost to teams that are clearly better than them. Or at least, to one of them, with PSG.LGD making short work of the Southeast Asian squad.

Up against Virtus.Pro, normally, Fnatic wouldn’t have a chance. But, the CIS bears aren’t really playing with the same kind of boisterous confidence that they once did. Though not in a slump, they’re not exactly in their best form either. That’s exactly just the kind of opportunity that Fnatic needs, who, by the way, boast three core players who could hold their own in the lane and two supports who’ve been known to make game-winning plays.

Betting: Fnatic to win at 3.18 odds. (GGbet)

Team Aster vs J.Storm

Kuala Lumpur Major Playoffs Day 2

J.Storm may not have had a lot of wins under their belt yet, but they are a promising squad with a lot of potential to improve if they stick together. (J.Storm)

Match Schedule: November 12, 2018 — 1700H SGT

Despite what their record says, J.Storm have been one of the most promising teams of the tournament. Meanwhile, Team Aster have been subpar. Their decision to bring in Gao ‘loveyouloveme‘ Yuan from For The Dream has definitely not paid off quite as well as they had hoped, and with J.Storm housing one of the better young laners in the game in the form of Jonathan Bryle ‘bryle‘ Santos De Guia, we’ll likely see Xu ‘BurNIng‘ Zhilei’s pet project bowing out of the tournament at this point in time tomorrow.

Betting: J.Storm to win at 3.8 odds. (GGbet)

Forward Gaming vs Gambit Esports

Kuala Lumpur Major Playoffs Day 2

Arif ‘MSS’ Anwar has done his fair share of heavy lifting for Forward Gaming, but he’ll need to do even more if his team is to survive and make a deeper run. (Forward Gaming)

Match Schedule: November 12, 2018 — 1800H SGT

Quite surprisingly enough, Forward Gaming find themselves in the lower brackets this early on in the playoffs. Luckily for them, it’s only Gambit Esports, a team who most likely rated too highly heading into the tournament, standing in their way.

Unless Roman ‘Resolut1on‘ Fominok slips up big time and makes one mistake after another, Forward Gaming should have this series in the big early.

Betting: Under 36.5 Minutes in Map 1 Game Time Over/Under at 2.11 odds. (GGbet)
