At Charleroi Esports 2019, Team Vitality stood heads and shoulders above the rest of the competition as they dropped only a single map to win the event and take home €50,000 in prize money.
To say that Team Vitality came to play in front of the Belgian crowd is only fitting. They kicked off the group stages with a 2-0 record before dropping their first and only map in the semifinals against G2 Esports, who were arguably their biggest competition in the tournament. Their opponents in the grand finals, Sprout, shared the same group as they did and came in second place, losing only to them.
Team Vitality were fresh off a Top 8 performance at the StarSeries i-League Season 7, where they lost to NRG eSports in the quarterfinals.
Team Vitality will now be playing in a couple of online tournaments for the next few weeks before flying off to Dallas for the DreamHack Masters Dallas 2019 at the end of May.
Charleroi Esports 2019 Grand Finals Recap
Sprout were actually the ones who started the grand finals as the aggressors as a successful B execute allowed them to put themselves on the board first, followed by two quick rounds to lead 3-0. Team Vitality managed to stop the slight bleeding in the fourth round, but Timo ‘Spiidi‘ Richter was quick to give his team the three-round lead back.
The German side continued their string of wins for most of the first half on the Terrorist side, holding a commanding a 11-4 lead as the game headed to the second half.
Team Vitality, however, would come roaring back in the second half, winning eight straight rounds to take the lead before Sprout finally caught a break in an eco round. Unfortunately, it was all too late. The momentum had clearly shifted towards Team Vitality as they simply took four straight rounds from the hands of Sprout to take the series lead 1-0.
Having smelled blood, Team Vitality continued their relentless assault on Cache in the second map of the series. Even though Sprout were able to take the first two rounds, Team Vitality remained unfazed. At the end of the first half, they’d held a 12-3 advantage and never looked back.
Sprout tried their best to mount a comeback, but to no avail. Team Vitality were just clearly the better team in Cache as they calmly ended the map 16-6 to sweep Sprout to win the Charleroi Esports 2019.
The Charleroi Esports 2019 was a generally successful event despite a couple of problems. Hopefully, the organizers see the event in a positive light and decide to do it again. The scene needs more tournaments such as this one, with sizable prize pools and zero of the top CS:GO teams so as to give the lesser squads a chance to compete against each other and improve.
With that said, with Team Vitality’s victory, which we had predicted earlier, now in the bag, their current trajectory has them on track to becoming one of those elite CS:GO teams that most likely will no longer be invited to tournaments like these.
What do you think of Team Vitality’s win at the Charleroi Esprost 2019? Was it a sign of bigger things for Mathieu ‘ZywOo’ Herbaut and the rest of his team? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.
