Rocket League Cross-Platform is finally here!

It’s been a long time coming but Rocket League cross-platform functionality is in the game and LIVE right now! The game had previously allowed players to PC players to play against PS4 players, but Sony’s intransigence around the issue of cross-platform play with Xbox had held up Psyonix from making the game completely cross-platform.

Sony’s stance changed last year though with the massive success of Fortnite. The sheer force of will of such a huge player base desperate to play with their friends meant Sony relented. That decision has opened the door for other games and top of the list was Rocket League – a game that many pros, whether on PC or Console, will play with a controller and thus a natural fit for Cross-Platform play.

This is just the second game that Sony has allowed this feature to be implemented and is a huge win for gamers no matter what platform they use.

Cross-platform play is now live across all versions of the game. That’s PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch players can be matched together in any game mode – ranked included.

Right now, players will be put randomly into teams with players from any platform, however at this time you can’t actually create a lobby with players from other consoles. Psyonix promises this will come in the first big patch of the year when they will introduce their RocketID system.

To get playing you will have to make sure Cross-Platform is enabled. Go to the “Main Menu” – “Options” – “Gameplay” and make sure there is a tick beside “Cross-Platform Play.” You will now be in queued into cross-platform lobbies.

You can play custom games with your friends on other consoles to do this simply click “Private Match” from the “Main Menu” and create or join your friends game from there.

So Rocket League Cross-Platform is finally here. Do you think it will have an impact on the competitive game? Will ease of playing with friends keep the excitement around a game entering its 3rd year? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
