Round 1 of the NA LCS Regional Qualifiers threw up an unexpected surprise on Friday night. The underdogs FlyQuest dominated favourites Dignitas as they won their series in a full 3-0 sweep.
Wild Turtle repeatedly owned his lane in a rare display of perfection that was missing for much of the past split. 19 kills in 3 games is a statistic that doesn’t quite do justice to the reality. Dignitas were simply unable to handle him despite several well planned ganks.
In the second game Turtle was so strong that he finished four items before Altec barely managed 2. He was deadly on Xayah, peerless on Kogmaw and often completely uncatchable.
A large part of his success came from a reinvigorated LemonNation. LemonNation took the last few weeks to master Rakan and he played him in style. A shield and a playmaker, the duo forged their own destiny as they carried FlyQuest to victory after victory.
Dignitas will have a lot of work to do over the next few months. They will have to cheer from the sidelines when the three NA LCS teams appear at worlds.
There have been two Team Dignitas teams this season. The one that appears in weeks 1-5 and again these past two weekends. This is the team that looks shaky, lacking in confidence and searching for answers.
The other went on a rampage in the second half the Summer Split and ousted Cloud 9 from the playoffs in unassailable style. Fans will be hoping that they can figure out what led to the latter appearances, and replicate them in the new season.
For Dignitas, it’s a tale that’s become all too familiar. They show so much promise but never make it down the home straight.
Room For Improvement
Despite the impressive win, there are definite points of weakness for FlyQuest. Balls struggled in the early game, often finding himself down several kills and 20 – 30 minions. They made some questionable level 1 invades and will be mindful that CLG may not let them get away with it tomorrow.
There’s little time to iron out the problems that do exist, but if today’s performance is anything to go by we’re in for a roller coaster ride on Saturday.
CLG vs FlyQuest
CLG will be favourites and looking to replicate last weekends performance. FlyQuest will be unpredictable and it could once again all come down to the bot lane.
Will Aphromoo and Stixxay stay on form? Can Wild Turtle and LemonNation repeat their own performances? How will FlyQuest fare against an on form team with an emerging Omargod?
Well, come Saturday night we should know the answer.
