UNILAD GORILLA started the Madrid Regionals grand finals as clear fan favourite. Over 75% of the respondents in an online poll predicted he would win the grand finals. Throughout the day, however, Prinsipe had shown that he is no pushover. The first match was held on Unilad Gorilla’s home console – the XBOX. Full review here.
Madrid Regionals Group stage
The group stage started early in the morning in chilly Madrid. As with past regionals, 2 groups from both the XBOX and PS4 division started the day. Group 2 of the XBOX division was labeled the group of death as it consisted of all sponsored players – Hashtag Harry, S04 Tim Latka, Feyenoord Quintenx and Episilon Fully. Scandal emerged as the group finished with everyone even on 4 points. Hashtag Harry claimed a referee had told him that goals scored did not matter. When the dust settled, he was 4th and last in the group and out of the tournament.
On XBOX, big names topped their groups to progress to the knockout stages – PSG sponsored Daxee, S04 sponsored Tim Latka, Free agent Dragon, and newly signed to Unilad – Gorilla. The PS4 division had a newcomer topping his group and becoming the overall PS4 division champion – Prinsipe. He was joined at the top of the groups by Gotzery, AFC AJAX sponsored Dani, and Kingep.
Madrid Regionals Knockout round – Prinsipe scores
In the knockout round, eventual XBOX division champion UNILAD GORILLA lost his first match in penalties. He was then placed in the loser bracket which meant that one more loss would see him out of the tournament. In the winners bracket second round, finalist Daxee faced off with Dragon in a match that many consider the match of the tournament, if not season. The match was back and forth and ended with Daxee edging out his opponent with a final scoreline of 5-4. This outcome sent Dragon to the lower bracket where he met his former partner – Gorilla.
The match between Unilad Gorilla and Dragon was a chess match in the first half, but exploded to life after the break. Gorilla scored and looked to keep his lead with smart play instead of bombing forward for a second. The winner of the match was guaranteed a place at the grand finals in Berlin, and Gorilla took it in his stride.
PS4 champion Prinsipe had a far easier time on his console. Having topped his group with 2 wins and 1 draw, Prinsipe was out looking for scalps. He quickly disposed of TheStrxnger in the first game of the knockout round. Wins against AFC AJAX Dani and, surprisingly, Maniika, put him in the PS4 division final match.
Madrid Regionals Division Finals
The XBOX division finals was a celebration of FIFA. The match saw PSG Daxee of the winner bracket face off against Unilad Gorilla from the loser bracket. Unilad Gorilla had to beat his opponent 2 times in order to win. PSG Daxee came thru the winner’s bracket, but by no means did he have an easy time there. Daxee failed to keep a clean sheet in any of his knockout round matches and was pressed hard by Gorilla from the onset. The first game ended 1-1 and eventually went to penalties which Gorilla won 3-2. Unilad Gorilla clearly had the momentum and fans on his side. Everyone was cheering him to win the second match and to be only the 2nd person to come back from the loser bracket to claim a division title.
The second match saw PSG Daxee hit the crossbar early in the game, and continue to try relentlessly for a goal. Unilad Gorilla took his chances when they presented themselves, and was able to score a vital goal which he held onto until the final whistle. Unilad Gorilla took the game, the 20,000 $ prize, and the title of XBOX division champion. Paris redeemed.
On the PS4 side, Prinsipe faced off against loser bracket winner Thestrxnger. It was Prinsipe who put him there in the first place when they faced off in the first match of the knockout round. That match ended 6-2 in favour of Prinsipe, and the final match was exactly half of that. Prinsipe ran riot and won the match 3-1. With a total of 14 goals scored in the knockout round, Prinsipe showed that he was definitely a force to be reckoned with heading into the grand finals.
Prinsipe opened the scoring in the first have with a well placed Suarez goal from a cross. The goal gave him an all important away goal. Suarez turned provider for Prinsipe’s second goal with Nainggolan slotting home from close range. At 2-0 it looked like the Gorilla’s revenge has been taken over by Prinsipe’s fairytale. Gorilla showed he had some teeth in the second half and pulled one back courtesy a scrappy Ronaldo goal. If you thought we would have a tame grand finals, you would’ve been severely mistaken. Unilad Gorilla pulled tied it up soon after with an expertly taken Suarez finish. The first match finished 2-2 and we were set up for a great final match on the PS4.
The second match, on the PS4, saw Prinsipe start attacking immediately from kickoff and score a goal within the first 5 minutes! This put Unilad Gorilla under pressure, him needing at least 2 goals at this scoreline to be crowned champion. Prinsipe kept up the pressure and was unfortunate to hit the post, but soon after picked up another goal with Suarez. Just like the first match, this one read 2-0. The game went into the have with that same scoreline. Gorilla needed at least 2 goals to push the tie to extra time.
As the second half of the second and final game kicked off, Gorilla looked relentlessly for a goal. He was rewarded in the 61st minute with a Pogba goal from close range. Prinsipe closed the game and the title in the 77th minute as he caught out Unilad Gorilla pressing for a 2nd goal. Panic defending gave Nianggolan an opportunity to score from close range. A cherry on the cake came in the form of a Suarez goal soon after. A consolation goal for Unilad Gorilla did nothing, as Prinsipe wins the Madrid Regionals overall title.
