Among pro players of Overwatch Bastion is hardly a favoured hero. Many Overwatch players feel that he is slow, limited in tactics, or difficult to play effectively. In reality, while Bastion cannot play effectively without support from his team, he is a versatile hero that is brilliant at defence, or crushing enemy strong points, or in guerrilla hit and run tactics. Bastion is one of the most effective characters when used with the right team strategy.
Bastion is a hero with two basic modes that he can play from. The first is a mobile Recon mode with a submachine gun, while the second is an immobile Sentry ‘turret’ form. Playing Bastion perfectly requires that you utterly optimize your management of both modes. The fact that Bastion can shift between modes at will is what makes him one of the most powerful and versatile characters in the game. Bastion’s Sentry mode has the highest DPS of the game and can cut down just about any hero who stays too long in his line of sight.
Overwatch Bastion – Strategies and tactics that work
Bastion is the ultimate defender, especially in bottlenecks. A very important point is that you should have an effective retreat from your ambush point planned. It would be great to team up with a character like Junkrat, who could plant traps along the corridor of your retreat or otherwise cover your escape in case any of the faster members of the enemy team try to kill you as you make your escape.
If they survive your attack in the first place, that is…
This is how you go about your ambush. As the enemy team appears, do massive damage with your Sentry mode, and then move at once. If you stay where you are, your enemies will immediately start to adapt to your position after you kill off one or two of them.
Never show your back to the enemy
Do not under any circumstances give one or two of the more speedy members of an enemy team the chance to circle round and get behind you, or you’re done for. The moment you make your kills and have lost the element of surprise, move into Recon mode and back off from the confrontation.
Bastion’s weakness is that shots that hit the small blue dome behind him do much more damage than normal. That said, the immobility of his Sentry mode makes him an easy target. Bastion is therefore extremely vulnerable when attacked from the rear in Sentry mode, and very mobile heroes can easily get behind Bastion to reduce him to spare parts. Try to fight in narrow areas and bottlenecks. In such places, Bastion’s Sentry configuration is lethal.
Find a secure spot to Self-Repair
Once you make your escape, take a moment or two to use Self-Repair to restore your hitpoints and prepare you for the next conflict. Then move to a different place and rinse and repeat the above.
You see how perfect Bastion is for this type of harassing guerrilla warfare. However, as he is fairly slow, he will usually need to partner with another player who can ensure his escapes for maximum effectiveness. In such a partnership, Bastion can prove a terror to an enemy team, dealing massive damage, and attacking from different points.
Never forget that Bastion doesn’t do ‘attack’
Since he can’t really move when he’s in Sentry form, he can’t really deal out massive damage and go on offense, and his Recon form doesn’t really have the right configuration for an offensive hero in any way. Sure, in escort mode, you can site him on a payload, for example, but the fact that he’s so vulnerable from the rear will always mean that if you place him in a position where he could be flanked by agile and highly mobile heroes, he’s done for.
Beware of snipers
In Overwatch Bastion’s extreme range of fire and the brutal amounts of damage he deals out make him quite an effective hero. If you find a suitable position where no one can attack you from the rear, all you really have to worry about are snipers. These could always take you out, and you have little defence against them except to attack their team by surprise, and move out of their view before they can recover from their surprise.
Here are important points to remember:
- Do not hesitate to move. The biggest difference between a good and a bad Bastion player is his ability to change his position, especially because once you’ve shot down an enemy, he’ll probably want revenge and will try to return to the point where you attacked to engage you.
- Do not hesitate to shoot at Reinhardt’s shield. Pro players know that the shield has hitpoints that can actually be used up if you deal it enough damage, and Bastion is precisely the hero who can do just that. Your ability to deal damage far outclasses the ability of Reinhardt’s shield to block your shots, and its protection will eventually give way.
- Deploy yourself in tight places. Near a health pack, for example, or in a corridor not far from the enemy spawn point. Your slogans in combat are “surprise” and “narrow”.
Know your maps
In Overwatch Bastion can only be used effectively if you know your maps intimately. Know the entire layout of every map, and learn every single area that you can reach on your own. Understand the paths enemy teams are likely to take, and which choke points you could use for your ambush.
Note that you don’t always have to place an ambush in the path of the enemy team – a Bastion ambush can be in a narrow area that looks out upon the path that an enemy team is likely to take. As they move into your field of view, open fire in Sentry mode, kill one or more of them, and escape at once.
How to play Escort
Stay in Recon mode, and shoot at ranged opponents. You will do them a lot of damage. Let your allies advance with the convoy and back off yourself to put yourself in a position where you can ambush the enemy team. Once you’ve found an ambush point a little ahead of the convoy, put yourself in Sentry mode and wait for the enemy team to walk right into your attack.
Such an attack can be especially effective if you can time it so that you unleash your attack just as the enemy team is going all-out in a focused attack on your allies. Take them by surprise in this way, and watch their life bars deplete in an extremely satisfying manner.
Now you must move
Remember that in Overwatch Bastion is all about the ‘hit’ and then all about the ‘run’. Make your attack and run. The enemy must not know your position, and must not know where you are next going to be positioned in the immediate future. Bastion is a very tactical hero. And there are those who call his playing style ‘simple’!
Bastion’s Abilities, and where best to use them
Bastion has various ‘configurations’ – read that abilities – and where one chooses to use them is really the difference between the brilliant Bastion player and an abysmal one. Make no mistake about it, Bastion is an extremely tactical player. He’s just a bit of a free-ranger and guerrilla fighter, but if that’s the way you like to play Overwatch, Bastion can be a major addition to your team’s arsenal. However, Bastion isn’t about choosing when to use an ability – he’s more about correctly placing himself in an optimal position on the map before using an ability. So let’s take a look at Bastion’s various ‘configurations’.
This is Bastion’s basic mobile form, and it really doesn’t amount to much in combat. Admittedly, his sub-machinegun inflicts significant damage, but his magazine of only 20 rounds means that he must regularly pause in his attack, giving more powerful and mobile opponents a chance at an easy kill. Yet Recon mode might be Bastion’s most important capability, because it allows him to efficiently change his position, to get himself an optimal firing arc in which to unleash his terrifying Sentry Mode.
Here’s where – if used at the right place and time, Bastion could be the difference between victory and defeat. With his absolutely monstrous rate of fire of thirty rounds per second, Bastion’s machine gun in Sentry form is an almost insurmountable obstacle for an enemy team, and is as lethal in attack as in defence. This weapon is also capable of burning through Reinhardt’s shield in a matter of a few seconds. If at first glance it seems that Bastion would do well to take to high ground in Sentry mode, the fact is that standing at the bend of a corridor or lane is just as effective at stopping an enemy advance.
However, do note that Sentry Mode is quite vulnerable from the rear
Once you damage the enemy team (and you will), you have to change to Recon mode and move to a new position, or be killed. The real strength of this hero comes from his ability to move quickly from one shooting position to another.
Not only does this allow him to avoid being taken out by snipers after being spotted, but it puts a lot of stress on the enemy team by forcing them to focus on him, and try to counter his next appearance. This gives more mobility to your allies, and allows them to better combine their capabilities to put down the enemy team.
In Overwatch Bastion’s guerrilla warfare breaks the team-spirit of the opposing party, allowing your team’s cohesion to defeat theirs. This is the best way to play Bastion in a pro game.
Just a small note here on how long it takes Bastion to shift between modes. Moving into Sentry Mode will take you an entire second, while shifting to Bastion’s mobile Recon form will take you just half that time. This means that Bastion can actually become mobile very rapidly – however, do note that, even if only for half a second, you are still vulnerable as you reconfigure.
Nevertheless, if you’re in Sentry form, and the enemy team is concentrating their attack on you – and especially if mobile enemy heroes are moving around you to take you in the rear, then you must shift to Recon mode, as this gives you the best chance at survival. Make a stand with Bastion, and you will – ultimately – die where you stand.
Repair mode is an important tactical advantage that the good Bastion player can capitalize on. To use it most efficiently, you need to ensure that you can effectively disengage from counter-attacking enemy players after each of your attacks. The best way to do this is to partner with a player who can actually cover your retreats with traps, like Junkrat.
Once you’re out of sight of the enemy team, you can repair any damage that Bastion has taken, and get back into combat with a full life bar. The Self Repair ability is a massive advantage, because Bastion can get back a quarter of his life for each second that the ability is used. Note that Bastion can still move while he Self Repairs, so you can use that time to move to your next attack position.
Bastion’s Ultimate Ability – His Tank Form
This ability lasts only eight seconds, but it can utterly shatter an enemy team if used at just the right time. Tank form is also just about the only way that Bastion can be used in a pure attack, in which the team’s heroes move forward while dealing damage. In Overwatch Bastion is really not an attack hero, so this mode gives him a trifle more versatility.
Bastion’s ultimate ability turns him into a mobile tank with a 150-point armour bonus. He can also use devastating shells (dealing 190 damage) to flatten the enemy line. By aiming correctly, you can eliminate most characters from the game in one shot, and panic the bigger tank-players as well. This is the ideal configuration to use to take a capture point – even playing entirely solo. It can also allow you to temporarily dominate the area around a convoy.
Weaknesses of the Tank mode
The real weakness of the Tank mode is that the characteristic noise that accompanies it could cause the enemy team to scatter, or take cover, so that your use of the ability is wasted. The best way to use this ability is when the enemy team is deeply engaged with yours, or to take the enemy in the rear with this ability while they are engaged with your team on a different front. A third way is to arrive from a high point in Tank mode, taking the enemy team by surprise. As with most of this character’s other abilities, Tank mode demands that you manoeuvre – against all odds – into a position where your ability can take the opposition by surprise.
The Tank Mode also shares Bastion’s common weakness of being vulnerable in the rear. A cube at his back acts as a “headshot” area if you give an enemy the opportunity to target this place. A shot here, and your glorious oppression of the enemy team comes to a quick and certain end.
Overwatch Bastion – Shortcuts and Commands
- In Sentry or Recon mode, use the left click to shoot at your enemies.
- To switch from one mode to another, use Shift,
- Press E to trigger Bastion’s Self-Repair,
- Press A to launch Bastion’s Ultimate Tank Mode.
Overwatch Bastion – Allied Hero Synergies
In Overwatch Bastion can be devastating with a Reinhardt in front of him and a Mercy behind him, and fighting side by side with Zarya. In such a configuration, he is especially effective against certain opponents.
While McCree’s DeadEye is a powerful ability, it can be shut down by killing McCree himself, and Bastion is just the hero to do this. When you hear McCree’s, ‘It’s High Noon,’ just aim well and take him out!
Reinhardt has a lot of HP and a shield. Bastion’s role is to destroy this shield so that his allies can take Reinhardt out. Bastion certainly deals out enough damage to cause Reinhardt’s shield to collapse.
Winston can give any enemy team a hard time. However, in Overwatch Bastion is one of the few heroes who can reach him, take him on, and put him down.
Overwatch Bastion – Heroes that can Counter this Character
Some of the heroes who are especially effective against Bastion are…
Junkrat has ricocheting bombs and his RIP Tire, and these are what you are most vulnerable to. If Junkrat’s grenades start to pass over you and begin to fall behind you, you must change your position immediately.
Roadhog’s Chain Hook is an effective counter to many static or channelling abilities. In the case of Bastion, the Chain Hook can actually wrench Bastion right out of his Sentry form, and push him back into Recon mode.
Widowmaker is deadly because her grapple allows her to attack on unexpected vectors. She and Hanzo are two characters that Bastion is especially vulnerable to, especially if they can come in with a headshot from the rear.
Genji can reflect your massive DPS back at you, which is a quick path to a quicker death.
A player using Tracer will be almost certain to use the Pulse Bomb to decimate you.
Mei will lead against you with her wall of ice, and will take advantage of the diversion to freeze you.
Overwatch Bastion – Core Strengths
- Almost invincible in the frontal arc.
- Highly suited to breaking enemy team synergies, either through his brutal Tank form, or by decimating enemy shields.
- Can also break opposing team morale through guerrilla tactics.
Overwatch Bastion – Core Weaknesses
- Low mobility.
- Average range.
- No subtlety in his actual abilities.
