With TNC Pro Team’s loss to Team Liquid and OpTic Gaming getting knocked down by Team Liquid to the lower brackets of the China Dota 2 Super Major, three more Dota 2 teams secured their direct TI8 invite — Mineski, ViCi Gaming, and Newbee. This now leaves as many as four Dota 2 teams fighting over the eighth and final invite.
TNC Pro Team, OpTic Gaming, The Final Tribe and VGJ.Thunder will now all look to keep their hopes of getting a direct TI8 invite alive in the lower brackets of the final Major of the 2017-18 Dota Pro Circuit.
The Fight for the Last Direct TI8 Invite
Heading into the China Dota 2 Super Major, there were still a couple of possible scenarios where either one of Mineski, ViCi Gaming, and Newbee will lose their spot in the Top 8 of the season leaderboards. However, now that all the teams set to disrupt the standings are in the lower brackets, all the three aforementioned teams have little to worry about when it comes to their direct TI8 invite.
While Mineski, ViCi Gaming, and Newbee can now rest easy, we can’t exactly say the same for the other Dota 2 teams vying for the last direct TI8 invite.
OpTic Gaming, for one, would have preferred to say in the upper brackets. Up by one game against Team Secret, they had a chance to close things out in Day 1 of the playoffs. Had they won, they would have secured a matchup against Team Liquid. Although still unfavourable, it would at least be better than facing elimination this early on in the tournament. Instead, OpTic Gaming would lose the next two games and are now in the lower brackets.
OpTic Gaming will now have to win their next three matches and pray that VGJ.Thunder do not place any higher than they do to get a shot at receiving a direct TI8 invite.
