EG and Newbee Finish Strong After Manila Masters Day 1

Manila Masters Day 1 went rather smoothly. Although, the event probably had every reason not to.

There were the connectivity issues early on, EternalEnvy falling off his chair and becoming a meme, a 30-minute panel that wasn’t broadcast by accident, and late at night, a moderate earthquake that shook the entire building.

Maybe, just maybe, that’s what happens when the best teams in the world all clash in one venue.

EG and OG Make Their Season Debut

Manila Masters Day 1

The premier tournament surprisingly opted for a straight double elimination playoff instead of going for a group stage format.

As always, all eyes were on #dreamgreen and #bleedblue. Being that this was their first tournament of the pre-TI7 season, people were excited to see how both teams would adjust to the new patch. Meanwhile, IG and Newbee looked to follow-up their top 4 finish at the StarLadder Invitational Season 2 last week with an even stronger finish.

Of course, the other teams just can’t be discounted. The hometown heroes, Clutch Gamers, was a big talking point early on. So was Team Secret and their new lineup. Speaking of new lineups, Team NP was also sporting new members. Team Faceless looked to prove that they remain one of the foremost teams in the SEA region.

Manila Masters Day 1 Belongs to EG and Newbee

Unfortunately, OG wasn’t able to finish Day 1 strongly.

After winning 2-1 against Team NP in the opening rounds, the four-time major winners were swept by Newbee, who took care of Team Secret in the previous round 2-1, on their way to the upper bracket finals. Meanwhile, Evil Geniuses swept through Team Faceless and took care of business against Invictus Gaming, 2-1.

Still, it’s too early to count OG out. Look to them to try to make up for their rather disappointing Day 1 finish and find their footing in the lower brackets tomorrow.

What To Expect In Day 2

Manila Masters Day 1

While all eyes were on Evil Geniuses and OG, other noteworthy things were also going on. Clutch Gamers, for one, wasn’t able to capitalise on their strong showing going into the tournament. They ended up losing 2-1 against Invictus Gaming. They now find themselves against Team Faceless in the lower brackets. The matchup should favour Clutch Gamers, as they have defeated their SEA rival previously and are stronger on form.

Team NP and their new lineup featuring ‘pieliedie’ and ‘FATA-‘ look strong despite bowing out early in Manila Masters Day 1. The team will now face Team Secret, which should make for an interesting matchup given the history between the two teams and their members.

Of course, the most awaited match of the day is between EG and Newbee in the upper bracket finals.
