Epsilon esports’ Joksan Redonda came from behind in stunning fashion to beat TheStrxnger to win the FIFA 19 Continental Cup.
Taking place over the weekend at the Paris Games Week, the Continental Cup was the first chance for PlayStation players to get serious points on Global Series leaderboard.
Featuring top talent from all over the world including Germanys Time “Timox” Siep and Mohammed “MoAuba” Harkous, Japan’s Web and with a special invite FIFA eWorld Cup World Champion Mosaad “Msdossary” Aldsossary, a surprise as his favoured console is Xbox.
Champions fail to impress
The world champion looked out of sort’s here. Scraping through the groups averaging just a goal a game. It’s clear he has yet to have a lot of game time with the new FIFA 19 and most importantly, yet to master the new timed finish. His attack was sluggish and lacked pace and he ultimately lost 2-0 to the impressive Dpeixoto7 in the round of 16.
It was another tournament where the Germans turned up in huge numbers, performed well but fell at the final hurdle.
As the Semi-Finals began 3 out of 4 were Germans. With many were envisioning an all-German final.
Timox who had a good tournament, with his timed finishing on point throughout. His performance vs Dpeixoto7 was a particular highlight. Winning 10 nil on agg to book his place in the semi-final.
MoAuba is a familiar sight at FIFA events and he was largely untroubled until his semi-final defeat against eventual winner Joksan. He was picked apart by the North American’s counterattacking style and it’s back to the drawing board for MoAuba.
TheStrxnger had been quietly plugging away throughout without blowing anyone anyway. But sometimes that’s the way to the final and so it was to be here. Strxnger took the first game and Timox the second. In the final game, the pressure got to Timox as he dropped deeper, inviting Strxnger to attack. Which he duly did scoring 3 goals in a 10 minute period and booking his place in the final.
The all-German final wasn’t to be.
The omens were good for Jaksan heading into the final. The sight of 3 Germans in a semi-final was a familiar one. The FIFA Interactive World Cup 2017 was the same and it was the Englishmen, Spencer “Gorilla” Ealing who went on to win that.
Joksan opened the scoring but it was Strxnger who went on to win Game 1. Scoring a beautiful with the last kick of the ball to make it 2-1.
TheStrxnger must have been feeling it was his tournament. Going into HT of Game 2 2-0 up. But Joksan wasn’t going to let his good work up this point go to waste. He started quick. Scoring a stunning strike with Cruyff from the kick off. The game opened up and they traded goals. Joksan missed a penalty to make it 4-3 in regular time.
Extra-time was needed. Strxnger opened the scoring with Gullit and Joksan went full tilt. Scoring from kick off and adding another to take Game 2.
TheStrxnger had lost his head, Joksan raced into a lead that he never looked like giving up eventually winning 4-2.
A deserved winner and the first FIFA 19 winner, taking home 20,000 Euro and 900 Global Series points.
A statement performance from Jakson and one to watch throughout the rest of the season.
