On January 16, the IEM Katowice 2019 Europe Minor will run alongside the CIS Minor, as 8 European CS:GO teams will be battling it out at the ESL Arena in Katowice for a shot at advancing to the IEM Katowice Major in February.
Whereas their CIS counterpart will feature up-and-coming teams, the European Minor is stacked with teams that are among the best in the world. Of the 8 teams, 6 are part of the latest HLTV Top 30 rankings, with at least one of them within the Top 5.
Given the higher-caliber of teams participating, expect the IEM Katowice 2019 Europe Minor to feature some of the matches that the IEM Katowice 2019 Minors has to offer.

Based on rankings alone, mousesports should be a shoo-in to qualify for the Major. Except, well, they aren’t. The IEM Katowice 2019 Europe Minor is stacked with teams that could potentially pull off an upset.
Case in point, ENCE eSports (5.44 odds) and North (5.34 odds).
In particular, the all-Finish lineup of ENCE eSports are not to be underestimated. Throughout all of 2018, the team flashed some serious potential in various tournament showings. Their best showing was arguably Starladder & i-League Season 6 where they outlasted Vega Squadron 3-2 in the Grand Finals to take home the title. At the same tournament, the 16-year-old Jere ‘sergej‘ Salo became the first ever Finish player to win the HLTV MVP award. He is also the youngest to win it as well.
Just like any other up-and-coming team, ENCE eSports’ performance against other top teams could use some work. However, they have also shown that their lineup only continues to grow with each triumph and defeat.
Given the fact that ENCE eSports are in good form and have recently won games against all of the teams playing at the IEM Katowice 2019 Europe Minor, it’s not outside of the realm of possibility of this team to make it all the way to the New Legend Stage of the Major in Katowice.
The IEM Katowice 2019 Europe Minor is arguably less about the heavy favourites, and more about the teams that could pull off an upset.
ENCE eSports is one such team. OpTic Gaming and Vitality are two others. The former are definitely looking forward to have a good showing, especially after picking up Ismail ‘refrezh‘ Ali, who had a bit of a coming out party at BLAST PRO Series Lisbon 2018 while standing in for Cloud9.
Of course, mousesports remain the heavy favourites. It’ll come as a huge surprise if they don’t make it all the way to the Major. But, who knows? Stranger things have happened in the past.
