On the 16th of January, the IEM Katowice 2019 CIS Minor, as well as the Europe Minor, will kick off. Of the 8 participating teams, only the top two will advance directly to the Katowice Major in Poland. Meanwhile, the 3rd-place team will earn another shot at playing for the final two spots of the event at the play-ins stage. The rest will be eliminated.
Only 1 of the 8 teams at the IEM Katowice 2019 CIS Minor are ranked among the HLTV Top 30 teams, with a number of players making their debuts at the qualifiers. Although, at first glance, that means that the level of competition will be low, it also means that most of the CIS teams are hungry and motivated to prove themselves.
Besides, as a long-known hotbed for top-tier CS:GO talent, the CIS Minor should be well worth a watch, rankings be damned.

IEM Katowice 2019 CIS Minor Outright Betting Odds
- AVANGAR at 3.30 odds.
- Gambit Esports at 4.18 odds.
- Team Spirit at 5.70 odds.
- pro100 at 6.70 odds.

Only 3 of these teams — AVANGAR, Team Spirit, and pro100 — were playing for a Major spot in London last year. This means that the rest of the pool are essentially new challengers to the event. Chief among them are Syman Gaming and Team Winstrike, with both teams having 3 players on their rosters that have never attended nor played at a Minor before. Meanwhile, Gambit Esports and Nemiga Gaming both are fielding one player who will also be making their Minor debuts.
But, don’t mistake their lack of experience as a weakness. On the contrary, that’s exactly what makes them scary.
With most of these teams eager to showcase their talents, you can expect an all-out brawl to ensue at the IEM Katowice 2019 Minor.
Who Are The Favourites?
Unpredictability is always the one thing that you can expect from the CIS region, and the CIS Minor is therefore, not an exception. Because, outside of the closest thing that the region has to a sure thing in Gambit Esports and AVANGAR, all bets are off.
Featuring a mix of inexperienced teams and teams who have fallen short at Minors way more times than they would bother to count, the battle for the play-ins spot will arguably be more interesting. Not a single one of the other six teams really stand out. All it takes is a good run for any one of them to pull off an upset.
But, if we had to single out a team, we’ll have to go with Team Winstrike.
A team known for their various underdog runs in the past, Team Winstrike is as unpredictable as a CIS team can get. One moment they look like they’re on the cusp of breaking through. Another, they look like a team that’s on the verge of breaking up. But, if Team Winstrike can muster up even an ounce of consistency, they could probably make a run for one of the two New Challengers Stage spots.
