GESC Thailand Dota 2 Minor Grand Finals – Odds, Analysis, Picks

Welcome to the GESC Thailand Dota 2 Minor Grand Finals, where Team Secret, Keen Gaming, Fnatic, and VGJ.Storm will match up to see who will end up taking home the trophy for the final Minor tournament of the season.

Keen Gaming just keeps on surprising. After barely making it out of the group stages with a 2-5 record, the lone Chinese team at the GESC Thailand Dota 2 Minor pulled off the unlikely upset when they eliminated Evil Geniuses 2-1 in the opening rounds of the playoffs. In the grand scheme of things, this doesn’t really mean anything for Keen Gaming. Save, for maybe, as a confidence booster. They’re nowhere near close to making it to the Top 8. However, the loss does put a huge dent in Evil Geniuses’ bid to get a direct invite to TI8.

Having said that, Keen Gaming will look to do the same against Team Secret tomorrow. As will VGJ.Storm, who will face up against the only undefeated team in the tournament, Fnatic. Whoever wins will move on to the GESC Thailand Dota 2 Minor Grand Finals where they’ll square off later in the day to see who takes home the title and a huge chunk of the prize pool.

Below are our takes on which of the four remaining teams are most likely to win it all.

Team Secret vs Keen Gaming

Match Schedule: May 12, 2018 (Saturday 12:00 GMT+8)

From one powerhouse to another, Keen Gaming definitely has their work cut out for them in this tournament. Even worse, unlike Evil Geniuses, the team they’re facing up against now isn’t likely to succumb to pressure nor meta changes; Team Secret are a legitimate team who’s one of the only few Dota 2 teams this season to have ever won multiple Pro Circuit tournaments.

Sure, Team Secret have been on a slight slump recently, bombing out early in the Majors they have attended. However, do remember that those were Majors, and the difference between the quality of competition they faced there and here is massive.

Keen Gaming may have managed to upset a contender in Evil Geniuses, but Team Secret is just on a whole other level.

Betting: Team Secret map advantage handicap -1.5 at 2.06 odds (ArcaneBet)

Fnatic vs VGJ.Storm

Match Schedule: May 12, 2018 (Saturday 15:30 GMT+8)

VGJ.Storm went 2-1 against The Final Tribe as we successfully predicted, and while they do certainly look promising — Yawar ‘YawaR‘ Hassan has definitely stepped up his play and the rest of the team has followed — it’s hard to trust their chances against a determined Fnatic squad. But, alas, this is Jacky ‘EternaLEnVy‘ Mao we’re talking about and he usually finds a way to defy convention, for better or for worse.

We’re not saying that Fnatic will lose, because that’s just absurd, but we are saying that this series is going to be a lot closer than most people would expect it to be.

Betting: Fnatic to go 2-1 at 3.13 odds (GGbet) / Total Maps Played over 2.5 at 1.95 odds (ArcaneBet)

GESC Thailand Dota 2 Minor Grand Finals Prediction

If our predictions are correct, the two teams who will meet at the GESC Thailand Dota 2 Minor Grand Finals will be Team Secret and Fnatic, in which case, we’re betting on Team Secret.

With a 4-1 record against Fnatic so far this season, it’s safe to say that Team Secret has had their number. Besides, unless we forget, Team Secret swept Fnatic the last time they met prior to this tournament at the Grand Finals of DreamLeague Season 9.
