After a one-day delay due to “adverse weather conditions, Day 1 of Galaxy Battles 2017 finally got off to a start earlier today. And as expected from one of the few LAN tournaments before the TI qualifiers start, each participating team was all-in from the get-go. See our Galaxy Battles 2017 Day 1 Recap here.
Galaxy Battles 2017 Day 1 Recap- Group Stages
Grouped with three of the top 4 teams featured in our Galaxy Battles Power Rankings, Mousesports simply stood no chance. While a fairly capable team, they would end up dropping all their games en route to one final stand at the lower brackets.
Meanwhile, TNC, Newbee, and Vici Gaming would each go on to lose just once and found themselves sporting identical records. Because of this, the three teams would have to settle the three-way tie via a BO1 tiebreaker to determine which two teams would go on to the upper brackets.
In Group B, Planet Odd turned heads by putting together one of their most solid performances as of late. Although the team’s to Infamous was quite surprising, they still managed to finish the group stages with a 2-1 record and claimed a spot in the upper brackets along with iG.Vitality.
Controversial Three-Way Tiebreaker
Whether in Dota 2, or any other sport in general, teams finishing with similar records isn’t unusual. Much more so in tournaments with a round-robin format. This is why there are rules in place to break the tie and decide which teams would win, or in this case, would go on to the upper brackets. However, Group A’s tiebreakers were a particularly “controversial case”.
The controversy starts with what many observers believed was Vici Gaming intentionally throwing their game against Newbee. For those that don’t know, throwing means intentionally losing.
After the three teams found themselves all tied up again after the tiebreakers, the organisers decided to break the time via the Time Rating. The decision resulted in Newbee and Vici Gaming going to the upper brackets by finishing 1st and 2nd respectively, leaving TNC in third place and dropping to the lower brackets.
Many speculate, however, that Vici Gaming meant to call “gg” a mere ~25 minutes into the game to give Newbee a slot in the upper brackets. Although games ending so early is not impossible, it is quite unusual. And, as many observers have pointed out, Vici Gaming had some pretty unusual item choices on their heroes. Not only that, but Vici Gaming also supposedly made some uncharacteristic mistakes throughout the said match.
If I were you, however, I’ll take this with a grain of salt. Both Reddit and Facebook aren’t exactly the most accurate sources of information after all.
Nevertheless, we’ll keep you updated if in case this “issue” escalates going forward.
Galaxy Battles 2017 Day 1 Recap – Main Bracket
After the tiebreakers, the tournament then proceeded with the upper bracket semifinals. There, both Planet Odd and Newbee dominated their respective matchups, sweeping iG.Vitality and Vici Gaming.
The two teams will now find themselves matched up against each other in the upper bracket finals.
Alleged controversies aside, Planet Odd‘s performance throughout the tournament has been a pleasant surprise. Winning Galaxy Battles 2017 will definitely earn them a place among the Top 10 in our Dota 2 rankings. But, more importantly, a win here will give them some much-needed momentum heading into TI7. Meanwhile, Newbee‘s performance only serves to justify their placement.
