Fortnite Winter Royale Is Here: How to get involved, format, schedule and more

We’ve had the Summer and the Fall Skirmish and now it is time for the Fortnite Winter Royale.

The tournament will take place across two weeks starting this weekend! It will allow for ANYONE(region dependent…) to qualify through the recently implemented in-game tournament system. There will be a $1,000,000 prize pool and it will be open to those in EU and NA with other regions slated for potentially smaller tournaments.

There are two key departures from previous official tournaments. Firstly, the aforementioned online qualifying – previously tournaments had been invite-only with a select few getting places from Solo Showdowns. Second, it will be using a different ruleset from traditional Fortnite, it will be closer to the one seen in the recent Pop-Up Cups.  With these changes, it looks like we are inching ever closer to an ‘Esport mode.’

This will be used as a test format for the $100,000,000 Fortnite World Cup that launches next year.

Fortnite Winter Royale – Schedule

The open qualifiers can be accessed from the Events menu in-game. Players will be able to play during both qualifying days so if you perform poorly on the first day you will have an opportunity in the second.

  • WINTER ROYALE QUALIFIER (OPEN): 11/24/2018 – 11/25/2018
  • EUROPE WINTER ROYALE FINALS: 11/30/2018 – 12/1/2018
  • NORTH AMERICA WINTER ROYALE FINALS: 12/11/2018 – 12/12/2018

The top 200 players will be eligible for both the NA and EU Finals and all matches will be played online.

You can watch the finals on Twitch, YouTube or Facebook.

Fortnite Winter Royale – Format

The tournament will be using the Pop-Up Cup rules and will be played as solos. That means a 500 mat cap, 40% increase in materials and a 50 health/shield boost when you kill an opponent. The point system will be similar to the Solo Pop-Up Cup but note the 30 points for a pin will no longer be the goal. You will need to outperform everyone else playing to be in with a shot.

Savvy players will be taken note of the recent meta changes. Pump shotguns will be getting buffed on Thursday, increasing damage whilst reducing range. There is also the new dynamite explosion weapon which dishes out 75hp but destroys builds in a way we haven’t seen since the Rocket Launchers were nerfed. It will also be interesting to see the Mounted Gun in action – like all new additions to the game it was added in a broken state but has been recently nerfed not once but twice.

Remember the Pop-Up Cup Duo tournament is running today and tomorrow so there are opportunities to test yourself in a competitive environment before the qualifiers start.

So that’s all the information we have at the moment. Check back with us as we get closer to the tournament for updates and of course, we will be following all the action from the finals!
