The Fnatic Dota team have decided to sub in the team’s coach Adam ‘343‘ Shah temporarily for Johan ‘pieliedie‘ Åström for the Starladder ImbaTV Invitational Season 5 on April 11 to April 15.
The Malaysia-based organization made the announcement via Facebook earlier today. They described the unprecedented move as a way to “further develop the team’s cohesion and shot calling.”
343 was part of Fnatic, along with Djardel Jicko B. ‘DJ‘ Mampusti, when they made it to the Top 4 at The International 6.
Desperate Times Call for Desperate Measures
The clock is ticking for the Fnatic Dota team to come up big in the six remaining Pro Circuit LAN tournaments. With only 884 Qualifying Points secured for the season, Fnatic are currently 11th place on the season leaderboards. They’re a few hundred points shy of the 10th place Natus Vincere (1,199 QP) and will have to at least double their QP to take over the 8th spot from VGJ.Thunder (1,665 QP).
Slotting in 343, who has not played professionally for quite a while, is a risky move befitting of the desperate times Fnatic find themselves in. If it pays off, Fnatic would find themselves inching closer to a direct invite to The International 8. However, that will only happen if they win the Starladder ImbaTV Invitational Season 5. This will be a tall task considering that also playing in the tournament are LGD Gaming and VGJ.Thunder, the former of which recently placed second at the Dota 2 Asia Championships 2018.
Even if Fnatic do win the tournament, they’re not safe just yet. The most Fnatic will receive is 112.5 QP per player, which will increase their season total to 1,221 QP, which still isn’t enough for a spot in the Top 8.
The Starladder ImbaTV Invitational Season 5 (Minor) is Fnatic’s only confirmed appearance of the 6 remaining Pro Circuit LANs. They’ve already failed to qualify for EPICENTER XL, which means they only have 4 chances left.
What do you think of Fnatic’s decision to sub in 343 for Pieliedie? Is it worth the risk? Or was the team better off playing with pieliedie? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.
