The FIFA eWorld Cup entered its 2nd day and Esportranks is here in London to bring you all the latest news from the biggest tournament in the FIFA esport calender.
Day 2 saw the resumption of the group stages with 2 games still to play and much undecided. The big stories from Day 1 were the top seeds MegaBit and Nicolas99FC’s perfect 5-0-0 records. Would they be able to keep that form up? Few could envisage them losing after such domination performances but this game has a way of throwing up new stories and Day 2 did exactly that.
The Groups Come to an End
Group A opened with the undefeated MegaBit facing off against Kurt04011. I said yesterday that MegaBit had been lucky to go 5-0-0 with a poor defence and not having played the best players and it proved to be correct. Let’s be clear Kurt demolished Megabit eventually winning 11-4 on agg. After the game, Kurt was in good spirits stating his desire to win the whole thing and taking playful jabs at Spencer ‘Gorilla’ Ealing saying if he was here last year “Spencer wouldn’t have won.”
This performance through down a gauntlet to everyone and set the tone for the rest of the day.
Elsewhere in Group A it went as expected the only change in the top 4 coming from Refense7 who squeezed out Alekzandur to take the 4th spot. It was a sad end for Alekzandur had the same points and GD and ultimately went out due to goals scored.
It was a situation that made you look back to the game crash he and MegaBit had on Day 1. Where on resumption MegaBit scored 2 unanswered goals. A young guys tournament shouldn’t come down to that and it was sad to see.
The Group of Death
Group B had been billed as the Group of Death but that was a misnomer in many ways. With 4 knockout places and two-legged ties the cream was always going to rise to the top there was still seeding for the knockout stages to play for so everyone was fired up which showed in the results.
Gorilla set his stall out early defeating Nraseck 6-0 and then drawing against Rafsou. A result that ultimately cost him the top spot. I said Rafsou might still have a say in this tournament and with this draw, he threw a spanner in the works for Gorilla.
Msdossary seems to always be in top gear. He easily dispatched Rafsou 11-2 and secured top place in the group.
The only place still up for grabs in the group was 4th and with Day 1’s surprise package Crafty sitting in 4th having to play 5th place Goalmachine21 you know this was going to be a good game. It was back and forth but eventually Goalmachine21 established his dominance winning 9-6 and sneaking into the knockout stages.
There was a couple of interesting match up’s in Group C. 2nd place Steffano Pinna had the opportunity to take top spot if he could defeat Nicolas99FC. It’s easier said than done but the omens were good. On the other side of the hall the other undefeated player, MegaBit, was getting smashed. Nicolas proved he is in another class though. Steffano had him down 3-2 with 5 mins to go. But Nicolas kept his cool and scored with his favourite striker Suarez with the last kick of the ball to draw 3-3. It was going to take a gargantuan effort to beat this man.
Again 4th place was really the only place up for grabs. It was YimmieHD’s to lose and lose he did. He had started Day 1 so well but didn’t do enough here to stay in the competition. Losing by a goal to both Stefano Pinna and Eisvogel allowing the unfancied HoneyBadger to take the final knock out spot.
This was the group with the most room for manoeuvre. Agge in top spot was going to have a tougher day than yesterday, facing two of the better players and that’s how it played out. He was humbled by MoAubayemang, who eventually took 1st, and he also drew with theStrxngeR. It was enough to secure 3rd but after a great start to the tournament suddenly things weren’t looking so rosy for the 2-time champion.
Damie made a mark on the tournament on the way out with his form improving drastically in Day 2. He picked up two wins on Day 2 including a 5-2 win against 2nd place Marcuzo.
MoAubameyang finished the group top but no clear winner emerged from what was a highly competitive group.
eWorld Cup Day 2 – Knockout Stages
The favourites for many were through to the knock out stages and as the floor really started filling up the tension in the O2 Arena reached new levels as people started imaging paths to the final for these guys.
The Xbox Side
Kurt finishing top seed meant he played surprise package Goalmachine21. Goalmachine by name goal machine by nature but Kurt also knows how to find the back of the net and he ultimately won their tie 9-7.
Msdossary played the Brazilian Presende7 who was no match for the Saudi Arabian. Msdossary won 5-1. Presende7 can be proud of his showing on Day 2 fighting his way back into contention but he simply found his level in this defeat.
It took everything in Gorilla’s locker to overcome Dani in a cagey match. Dani had the majority of the possession and went up one nil. With the help of Tass – Gorilla’s FaZe teammate and coach for this tournament, they switched tactics. Gorilla gradually improved and to exert his skill on the match. It finished 3-2 to Gorilla and with that last year’s winner was through to the quarters.
MegaBit’s poor performance in the last 2 group games meant he had the potentially tricky tie of fellow German and sparring partner Nsraeck. Far from ideal. It was a tough game that either man could have won but it was MegaBit that took the win.
The PlayStation Side
Nicolas99FC surprised no one by beating theStxngeR to reach the quarterfinals. The tie was over early as theStrxngeR gave away a penalty early on that Nicolas99FC took no hesitation in scoring. From there it was plain sailing for the Argentine who won the tie 5-2.
Marcuzo and Eisvogel met in the quarters. Marcuzo won 3-1 in the first leg and Eisvogel 2-1 in the 2nd which was enough to see the Man City’s Marcuzo into the quarters.
Stefan Pinna, who has impressed throughout the tournament put an end to Agge’s day in a comprehensive 8-4 win. Agge can be proud of what he has achieved at this tournament with many doubting his abilities after a patchy couple of years.
The game of the quarters was the MoAubameyang vs HoneyBadger match. New Zealand’s Honeybadger had won hearts during the group stages as he smashed his way into the knockout stages when it seemed impossible. And he wasn’t going to just make up the numbers when he got here. He raced into a 3 nil lead against the 3 times German champion and it looked like we could be set for one of this year’s big upsets. Mo had other ideas though with a ferocious support from the German contingent on the floor he gradually reduced the deficit. MoAubameyang went on to win the tie 5-3.
Champions Will Fall
The last games of Day 2 were going to be the quarters and what a set of match up’s we had. The atmosphere in the o2 Arena got tense as the biggest players in the game were going to go head to head. We had games like Kurt vs Gorilla and Nicolas vs Marcuzo and the pressure was well and truly on.
The Xbox Side
Kurt is known to have a big mouth, the self-proclaimed “Great Fifa Player in the World,” and in the lead up to this game, he didn’t disappoint. Throwing shade on Gorilla and saying it would be his name that would be carved into the trophy as the winner. And we have to hand it to Kurt after this run he might, in fact, be the greatest. He went into this match having scored over 30 goals in the 3 previous games. And he did not let up against Gorilla. Last year’s winner could not get close to him in this quarterfinal matchup winning the first game 4-1. Then in the second leg Kurt0411 showed a maturity in his game we haven’t seen before by containing Gorilla who could only score the one goal. The tie ended 4-2.
It was more lopsided in the other game from the Xbox bracket. Msdossary saw off MegaBit 8-4. Megabit ended a nightmare Day 2 with two sending off’s. Sergio Ramos and Maldini both getting red cards as MegaBit’s defence collapsed and his tournament ended. MegaBit will have to improve defensively to get the FeWC win he craves.
The PlayStation Side
Noone could quite believe what they were seeing. Two shocks on the PlayStation side as both MoAubameyang and the man they thought was unbeatable Nicolas lost. Yes Nicolas. Lost a game of FIFA.
But first, let’s talk about the Belgian Stefano Pinna. He wouldn’t have been tipped by many to get this far pre-tournament but he has impressed in a big way. Finishing 2nd in his group and drawing with Nicolas99fc he reached the quarter-final unbeaten. It wasn’t going to be easy against Mo and it was a close fought game but Pinna was more adventurous in attack and won the tie
Whatever happens in the rest of the tournament Marcuzo can be proud of what he achieved here. His performances in the group stage had been patchy but he has gradually found his form. Many thought Nicolas was unbeatable but Marcus proved them wrong. It’s hard to say exactly what happened here. Nicolas didn’t play his natural game. Usually so clinical, he squandered chance after chance. Marcus won’t care he’s through to the semi-final.
Looking At Day 3
What a day of FIFA we had at the O2 Arena. We were spoilt. Players at the top of their game, next level trash talking and massive upsets. I am pumped for tomorrow where we will find out not only who is the best on each console but who is the best FIFA player in the world. It’s gonna be big and of course, we’ll be there providing you with all the stories as they happen.
