It seems like the plight of Mysterious Monkeys and Ninjas in Pyjamas has no end. FC Schalke 04 and Giants Gaming have dealt them crush defeats in Round 1 of EU LCS 2018 Spring Promotion tournament, making a statement right off the bat.
EU LCS 2018 Spring Promotion Tournament: MM vs. S04
The first series took place on August 17. The first match was, once again, a chaotic display of Monkeys’ early and mid-game prowess, trumped by their absolute inability to capitalize on their early lead.
Schalke played it clever, pushing for objectives, snowballing in the last 15 minutes of the match.
In the second game, Monkeys pretty much schooled Schalke. With a total kill score of 9 to 1 kills in the end, Monkeys controlled and dictated the tempo of the entire game.
In the third game, Monkeys opened up very slowly and cautiously. Schalke didn’t rush anything but carefully waited for Monkeys to start falling apart on their own, like they usually do.
Slowly pushing lanes, the critical teamfight happened right near the end of the match. Monkeys got obliterated. It was 2-1 for Schalke at this point.
Fourth match was probably the most interesting and action packed of all. Monkeys established the faster pace of the game, one which seems to suit their seemingly chaotic teamplay. Schalke succumbed under the pressure after about 37 minutes.
Fifth and final game saw a small early lead by Monkeys, insufficient to prove problematic for Schalke. Again, after simply waiting for Monkeys to start losing ground and capitalizing on more polished objective-oriented plays, Schalke took the lead and quickly snowballed into a win.
3-2 – a close, but decisive Bo5 series victory for Schalke.
EU LCS 2018 Spring Promotion Tournament: NiP vs. GIA
Ninjas just can’t seem to click. The rag-tag group of Korean imports and LCS veterans just can’t seem to find their synergies this season. Somewhat decent early games quickly dissipat into nothingness in the mid and late phase.
Giants seized their opportunity to get 2 relatively easy wins in the first two games. Ninjas gained some composure in the third match with a landslide 14-6 victory.
Nevertheless, Giants proved too much for the troubled EU LCS resurgent. In the fourth and decisive match, they decisively defeated Ninjas with 12 to 4 kills.
With a really unremarkable performance, Ninjas’ only hope now is to slash through Monkeys in Round 2 and the loser of Giants vs. Schalke in Round 3.
EU LCS 2018 Spring Promotion Tournament: Round 2 & 3
The two EU CS Playoffs winners with a history in EU LCS are now scheduled to fight each other. Victory guarantees a spot at EU LCS next spring. Meanwhile, Ninjas will take on Monkeys for the second time this season.
Unfortunately, in a situation like this, 1 of the 2 current EU LCS bottom dwellers is inevitably going to get knocked out in Round 2.
Mysterious Monkeys defeated Ninjas in Pyjamas in the summer split cross-group stage. Realistically, they should win this matchup. However, they are not that much better, and since this is Bo5, anything is possible.
Whoever wins, will have to fight one more time, against the loser of the Schalke vs. Giants series. Whoever wins THAT series gets the last open spot at EU LCS next season.
Obviously, there’s a legitimate chance we won’t see neither Monkeys nor Ninjas next year. Such is the nature of competitive scene.
