The ESL One Hamburg 2018 Playoffs Day 1 will see two lower bracket matchups between Evil Geniuses and compLexity Gaming, as well as Forward Gaming and paiN Gaming.
Hands up if you thought Evil Geniuses were going to start the playoffs in the lower brackets. One of the tournament’s heavy favourites to win, many expected them to be a shoo-in to at least be in the Grand Finals.
Well, so much for that.
Losing Syed Sumail ‘SumaiL‘ Hassan hurt them far more than most people could’ve imagined. Although Quinn ‘CCnC‘ Callahan is not a bad player, he’s not the lane dominator that SumaiL is. He doesn’t win his matchups in a way that forces the enemy team to rotate and provide help, which helps make space for the rest of Evil Geniuses.
Having said that, we’ll now move on to the ESL One Hamburg 2018 Playoffs Day 1, where Evil Geniuses will face off against compLexity Gaming while paiN Gaming will try to push deeper into the tournament by beating Forward Gaming.
ESL One Hamburg 2018 Playoffs Day 1
Evil Geniuses vs compLexity Gaming
Match Schedule: October 26, 2018 — 1200H CET
Evil Geniuses are vulnerable. Their mid lane is in shambles without SumaiL and CCnC is not exactly versatile enough to swap lanes with either one of Artour ‘Arteezy‘ Babaev and Gustav ‘s4‘ Magnusson in a pinch.
Lucky for them, compLexity Gaming is a familiar opponent. Not only that, but none of compLexity Gaming’s players are particularly lane dominant, which should help shore up their weakness in that particular area.
While we expect Jacky ‘EternaLEnVy‘ Mao to try and catch Evil Geniuses off guard, because, well, that’s just who he is, this should be a relatively easy series going in the way of the boys in blue.
Betting: Correct Score 2:0 (In Maps) in favor of Evil Geniuses at 1.82 odds. (GGbet)
Forward Gaming vs paiN Gaming
Match Schedule: October 26, 2018 — 1550H CET
Forward Gaming don’t seem like they have everything together at this point of the season. They’re not as dominant as you would expect them to be, given their particular lineup. Although there are flashes of brilliance, it seems like they’re not always on the same page.
This is contrast to paiN Gaming, who, despite their record during the Group Stage, looked like a team that had been playing together for so long.
paiN Gaming were competitive in every game they played in, and look only bound to improve as the tournament goes on. Apparently, having someone like Rasmus ‘Misery‘ Filipsen help take over shotcalling, drafting, and captain duties has helped enabled the rest of the team to play to their absolute best.
This isn’t to say that paiN Gaming are legitimate contenders now, but we do like their chances against Forward Gaming.
Betting: paiN Gaming to win at 2.93 odds. (GGbet)
