ESL One Hamburg 2018 Day 1 will kick things off with twelve best-of-two round robin matches as the teams battle for points to see who will move on deeper in the tournament.
Already, we’ve seen a huge shift in power even before the tournament started. Heavy favourites, Evil Geniuses, saw their chances of winning the tournament drastically lowered now that they’ll playing without their star mid laner, Syed Sumail ‘SumaiL‘ Hassan.
Forward Gaming too encountered issues with their own mid laner Yawar ‘YawaR‘ Hassan. Like Evil Geniuses, they will have to play the tournament with a stand-in.
Although both team’s stand-ins are capable players in their own rights, they play drastically different styles from the players they are replacing. Not to mention, the caliber of teams playing in the tournament means that they’ll have to adjust quickly if they want to give themselves any chance of making a deep run.
Having said that, let’s get right on to business and start our analysis for the matches on ESL One Hamburg 2018 Day 1.
Winning Picks for ESL One Hamburg 2018 Day 1
With twelve matches to choose from on ESL One Hamburg 2018 Day 1, there’s plenty of opportunity to make bank, and at the same time, to lose.
While we won’t be covering each match, we’ll be giving you picks that are the most likely to yield and produce favourable results.
Alliance vs Mineski
Match Schedule: October 23, 1200H CET
This season has gone the complete exact opposite for these two teams.
A team that didn’t even come close to make it to TI8, Alliance have become one of the teams to watch this season. Meanwhile, Mineski, who won a Major last season and placed in the Top 12 at TI8, are a mere shell of their former selves, only making their way to LAN tournaments by way of direct invites.
Although a 1.88 odds to draw is not bad, how Mineski have performed this season suggests that a sweep against their favor is much more likely.
Betting: Alliance to go 2-0 vs Mineski at 2.92 odds. (GGbet)
paiN Gaming vs Vici Gaming
Match Schedule: October 23, 1200H CET
Believe it or not, but paiN Gaming actually has a very favourable record against some Chinese teams, including Vici Gaming.
While this year’s Vici Gaming squad are far from the same as last year, history suggests that paiN Gaming’s ultra-aggressive “jump first, think second” play style might give the more reserved, team fight-oriented ViCi Gaming a bit of trouble.
Betting: paiN Gaming vs ViCi Gaming to draw at 2.11 odds. (GGbet)
compLexity Gaming vs EVOS Esports
Match Schedule: October 23, 1700H CET
A team that caught a lucky break by getting invited to ESL One Hamburg 2018 just because TNC Pro Team decided to skip the tournament, EVOS Esports literally have no business being here.
A fringe Tier 2 team at best, EVOS Esports will be lucky enough to walk away with at least a single win from this tournament, and it’s highly unlikely that the single win will come against compLexity Gaming, as unstable as their captain, Jacky ‘EternaLEnVy‘ Mao, may be.
Betting: compLexity Gaming to go 2-0 vs EVOS Esports at 2 odds. (GGbet)
Team Aster vs Virtus.Pro
Match Schedule: October 23, 1920H CET
Fresh off a win at the Maincast Autumn Brawl online tournament, Virtus.Pro are headed into ESL One Hamburg 2018 ready to defend their title. However, they probably aren’t going to get out of the group stages unscathed, what with the likes of Forward Gaming, Team Aster and Ninjas in Pyjamas, preparing to take them down.
Of those three teams grouped up with Virtus.Pro, it’s Team Aster that probably has the highest skill ceiling and potential.
While they are a relatively newly-formed team, the talent in the lineup is absurd, and with Xu ‘BurNIng‘ Xhilei as their coach, you’d best bet that they’re ready to take on all comers. Although they probably won’t be able to take the entire series off of Virtus.Pro, we should expect a tight series with at least one game going in their favor.
Betting: Virtus.Pro vs Team Aster to draw at 2.44 odds (GGbet)
Which teams do you think will make the most noise in ESL One Hamburg 2018 day 1? Will Virtus.Pro be just as dominant in their return to Hamburg? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.
