In a hard-fought best-of-five, ENCE eSports eeked out a win against Vega Squadron in the Grand Finals to win StarSeries i-League Season 6.
After the bracket was revealed, no one expected either of these two teams to make it this far. Even when playing in front of the homecrowd, Vega Squadron barely made it to the playoffs with a 3-2 Group Stage record. Meanwhile, ENCE eSports needed to take down the tournament favourites mousesports and BIG, a very unlikely turn out.
The Grand Finals of StarSeries i-League Season 6 was a very close affair.Vega Squadron struck first with a 16-14 Train performance. However, ENCE eSports would counter by winning Inferno and Dust2 quite convincingly. By then, most had already expected the Finnish team to close out the series, but Vega Squadron had other ideas in mind.
The hometown team were able to tie the series by winning Mirage 16-12 and were seemingly able to shift the momentum completely towards their favor. However, ENCE eSports would not be unfazed. With their captain Aleksi ‘allu‘ Jalli having a relatively quiet game on Overpass, ami ‘xseven‘ Laasanen and Aleksi ‘Aleksib‘ Virolainen, stepped up to fill the void.
After leading 12-3 at half time, ENCE eSports had trouble closing things out as Vega Squadron took advantage and went on to win five straight rounds before the Fins stopped the bleeding at 13-8. From then on, it was smooth sailing as ENCE eSports had learned not to match the ultra-aggressive play style of Vega Squadron and ultimately won the series 16-9.
Winning StarSeries i-League Season 6 gives ENCE eSports their first notable CS:GO LAN win in history. They’ll also take home $125,000 for their efforts with the 16-year-old wunderkind Jere ‘Sergej‘ Salo bagging the MVP trophy.
How ENCE eSports Won StarSeries i-League Season 6
Heading into the tournament, ENCE eSports were the fourth least-likely squad to win StarSeries i-League Season 6 according to title odds. And, at many points during the tournament, their inexperience showed.
ENCE eSports lost anti-eco rounds and occasionally made ill-advised force buys. But, despite their shortcomings, they were able to walk away from the Group Stage 3-0. They even beat mousesports in the process. Then, in the playoffs, they took out BIG 2-1 in a series that could’ve gone 2-0 had they been able to close the game out on Overpass.
Up against OpTic Gaming in the semifinals, ENCE eSports had learned a bit and made relatively short work of the North American squad.
While a lot of their kinks continued to show up against Vega Squadron, they had showed that they were very strategic in their play and that they also had a relatively deep map pool. Although the verdict is still out on whether this win makes them a legitimate contender, winning StarSeries i-League Season 6 does put ENCE eSports on the map.
As for Vega Squadron, this is a miracle run through and through.
The CIS organization had an ultra-aggressive play style that worked, to some extent. It backfired a lot of the times too. They had to rely on too many miracle eco rounds and their lack of stand-out individual players is troubling.
It was definitely entertaining watching them play, but don’t expect Vega Squadron to make a similar deep run anytime soon.
