The DreamLeague Season 9 Grand Finals will see the reigning champions Team Secret defend their title against the unlikely upstarts Fnatic in a best-of-five series that will decide who will take a bigger chunk of the $300,000 USD and 300 DPC Points prize pool.
As predicted earlier, Fnatic gave Newbee benefits. Their frenetic, often out-of-meta playstyle was simply too much for the disciplined play of the Chinese powerhouse. However, what most people did not expect is how Fnatic’s series against Team Liquid turned out. Although the reigning TI champions were without the services of Amer ‘Miracle-‘ Al-Barkawi, many still expected them to at least make it to the DreamLeague Season 9 Grand Finals. But that was not the case. Instead, Fnatic defeated them 2-0. This set up a drama-filled Grand Finals between Jacky ‘EternaLEnVy‘ Mao and his former captain, Clement ‘Puppey‘ Ivanov.
Fnatic vs Team Secret

As much as most people would love to call this a close matchup, this isn’t. Team Secret are the better team and it’s not even close. Yes, Team Secret lost the last time these two teams met. But that was at ESL One Katowice. Team Secret, specifically, Yeik ‘MidOne‘ Nai Zheng were fresh off the Chinese New Year holiday back then. The entire team also had not had time to bootcamp for the tournament, which was quite obvious given their unusually slow placement.
This time around, Team Secret are not just looking better, they’re playing a whole lot better as well. Not a single one of their games throughout the entire tournament en route to securing their berth at the DreamLeague Season 9 Grand Finals have come close. Team Secret have outdrafted and outplayed their opponents, including Team Liquid, who just could not keep up with the blistering pace that they’re currently playing at.
Fnatic have a legitimate chance of pulling off an upset. They play fast as well and have shown that they can draw out games when necessary. But, this is a best-of-five we’re talking about. Despite how well they’ve played so far, Fnatic are still far too inconsistent to beat Team Secret in a five-game series.
