DOTA Summit 7 Mid-Tournament Recap

After 2 days of battling at the DOTA Summit 7 two teams secured their spots in the winners’ bracket finals. On the other hand, in the lower bracket, teams will have to work hard to pave their way and reach the Grand Finals. We cover the action from the first two days of 7th premier tier tournament organised by Beyond the Summit.

The Quarterfinals

Since we have 8 participating teams, and the event is played in double elimination format, the first day started with 2 quarterfinal matches – Virtus.pro against Team Empire and LGD vs NP. VP proved that they are the best team in the CIS region and defeated Empire with ease. In the other matchup LGD and NP played a very close Bo3 but in the end the Chinese squad managed to take a 2:1 victory to setup the duel with Virtus.pro for the spot in the winners’ finals. NP and Empire will have to reset and begin again from the bottom of the lower bracket.

Beyond the Summit

To end day one we had the match between VP and LGD. In the first game, Virtus.pro picked comfortably, and made quick work of the Chinese squad. However in the second game Tiny and Lone Druid picks didn’t really work out for them. LGD with their strong early comp managed to tie the series at 1-1 in less than 30 minutes. In the deciding third map, the Chinese squad didn’t let the match get to the late game where VP had clear advantage with Magnus+Troll+Void. Strong presence of Storm, SK and Batrider in the early game secured them a spot in the winners’ finals.

Day 2 – Fight!

In the other side of the quarterfinals, we had Na’Vi battling against VG.J and DC was paired against Team Secret. Na’Vi picked up WD and Tusk both games which proved too strong against VG.J’s SK and Dazzle, enabling their cores a better early game, leading up to 2-0 victory. Secret against DC showcased that despite advantages, DC need to work a lot on their execution. Inability to play the map in game 1 caused them to take on unfavourable fights, giving Secret the opportunity to come back and eventually win the game. In game 2 DC’s advantage was too great to drop, so they tied the series. However DC’s Underlord pick proved useless in game 3, and Secret took series 2-1 to set up the duel with Na’Vi for the spot in the winners’ finals.

Beyond the Summit

Na’Vi allowed them to pick Sand King+CM in both games, which proved to be a disaster for them. Secret executed their game plan perfectly and emerged victorious after 2 games, which lasted less than 50 minutes combined.

Secret and LGD will meet in the winners’ finals, while other contenders will have to look for their chance through the lower bracket. Na’Vi and Virtus.pro start their path from the second losers round . Their opponents will be teams from following matchups: winner of NP vs Empire will play Na’Vi, while Virtus.pro awaits the results of DC against VG.J.

The prize pool for DOTA Summit 7 is $100,000.
