China Dota 2 Super Major Group Stage Opening Matches: Odds, Analysis, Picks

With the China Dota 2 Super Major Group Stage following the GSL format, we’re left with far fewer matches to work with this time around. But, that shouldn’t pose a problem. For starters, each match is a best-of-three. This should leave little room for cheese strat shenanigans. However, because no team is going to be eliminated during the group stages, we can’t exactly rule out the possibility of some teams — we’re looking at you Virtus.Pro and Team Liquid — using the group stages to experiment with their picks and drafts before the playoffs.

In any case, worrying about that seems trivial. Even if certain teams do end up experimenting, there’s too much money (and qualifying points) on the line for teams to just sit back and relax.

Having said that, below are our picks for the opening matches of the China Dota 2 Super Major Group Stage.

Team Liquid vs Team Spirit

China Dota 2 Super Major Group Stage

The China Dota 2 Super Major will be the last chance for Team Liquid to win a Major this season. (Perfect World)

Match Schedule: June 2, 2018 (Saturday 10:00 CST)

Team Liquid are starting to show cracks in what used to be perceived as an impenetrable armour. This should make what should have been a lopsided matchup all the more intriguing. But, while Team Liquid probably won’t lose this early on, something tells me that Team Spirit will make this series much closer than most people imagined.

Betting: Correct Score 2:1 (IN MAPS) in favour of Team Liquid at 3.16 odds (GGbet)

Newbee vs Natus Vincere

China Dota 2 Super Major Group Stage

Newbee will need all hands on deck if they want to end the season and go into TI8 on a high note. (Perfect World)

Match Schedule: June 2, 2018 (Saturday 10:00 CST)

Plenty of people have already lost faith in Newbee after what has been a rather lacklustre second-half of their season. Consider me not one of them. Although Newbee have historically had a hard time dealing with hyper-aggressive teams like Natus Vincere, they should fare a whole lot better now that former The International 2014 champion Wang ‘SanSheng‘ Zhaohui is out there coaching and drafting for the team.

Betting: Newbee to win at 1.43 odds (ArcaneBet)

TNC Pro Team vs Virtus.Pro

China Dota 2 Super Major

Virtus.Pro will look to break their tie with OG and become the first team to have five Major titles with a win here. (Virtus.Pro)

Match Schedule: June 2, 2018 (Saturday 10:00 CST)

TNC Pro Team are one of the few Dota 2 teams to have closely approximated Virtus.Pro’s playstyle. The only difference is that their execution could use some improvement. Where Virtus.Pro play very rarely make mistakes, especially past the laning stage, TNC Pro Team have been known to occasionally throw a game or two on the backs of questionable late-game decisions.

With the four-time Major winners having shown no signs of slowing down, don’t put it past them to finish the China Dota 2 Super Major Group Stage without dropping a single game.

Betting: Correct Score 2:0 (IN MAPS) in favour of Virtus.Pro at 1.9 odds (GGbet)

Evil Geniuses vs ViCi Gaming

China Dota 2 Super Major

Tal ‘Fly’ Aizik flies in from OG to try and right the sinking ship that has been Evil Geniuses’ season so far. (Evil Geniuses)

Match Schedule: June 2, 2018 (Saturday 10:00 CST)

The odds sure are stacked against Evil Geniuses. They’re playing with an all-new lineup and have only had days to practice with each other. But, when you really think about it, we’re not just talking about any lineup here. We’re talking about a team that boasts two players with over 1,000 career wins, in addition to having two Major winners and two TI winners. Put simply, these guys know how to win, and matched up against the terribly inconsistent ViCi Gaming, the boys in blue have a pretty good chance of kicking off their first LAN with their new roster on a high note.

Betting: Evil Geniuses to win at 2.17 odds (ArcaneBet)

The Final Tribe vs Team Secret

China Dota 2 Super Major Group Stage

Team Secret are fresh off a long break after their Top 6 finish at the MDL Changsha Major. (Team Secret)

Match Schedule: June 3, 2018 (Sunday 10:00 CST)

Team Secret’s supposed issues seem overblown when you consider that they have only lost to teams who are either on the up-and-up or are already legitimate contenders. Of course, that’s concerning if you’re a fan of Team Secret, but there’s little reason to worry about them against The Final Tribe, who are far from even being considered as fringe contenders.

Betting: Team Secret to win with a correct score of 2-0 at 1.53 odds (ArcaneBet)

Mineski vs VGJ.Storm

China Dota 2 Super Major

Already out of the running for a direct TI invite, there’s no pressure for VGJ.Storm to perform well, which makes them a sleeper pick to make a deep run. (Team VGJ)

Match Schedule: June 3, 2018 (Sunday 10:00 CST)

At this point, it’s easy to see that Mineski’s eyes are already fixated on The International 2018. You can see it in their drafts and their willingness to experiment. It certainly doesn’t help that no team risks getting eliminated during the China Dota 2 Super Major Group Stage. Considering that VGJ.Storm are far from a bad team, Mineski are in real danger of losing here.

Betting: VGJ.Storm to win at 2.03 odds (ArcaneBet)

PSG.LGD vs Infamous

China Dota 2 Super Major

The current iteration of PSG.LGD have won two out of three Majors they have played in so far. (LGD Gaming)

Match Schedule: June 3, 2018 (Sunday 10:00 CST)

This is as lopsided as any matchup can get during the China Dota 2 Super Major Group Stage. No offense to Infamous, but not even paiN Gaming, who are easily the best Dota 2 team in South America, stand a chance against PSG.LGD. In fact, unless you’re talking about a potential matchup against Team Liquid or Virtus.Pro, which shouldn’t come until the playoffs, PSG.LGD are an easy pick to win against anyone.

Betting: Correct Score 2:0 (IN MAPS) in favour of PSG.LGD at 1.52 odds (GGbet)

VGJ.Thunder vs OpTic Gaming

China Dota 2 Super Major Group Stage

OpTic Gaming are looking for at least a fourth-place finish to secure themselves a direct invite to The International 2018. (OpTic Gaming)

Match Schedule: June 3, 2018 (Sunday 10:00 CST)

OpTic Gaming already took a convincing series win against VGJ.Thunder in the Grand Finals of Starladder ImbaTV Invitational Season 5. Since then, the up-and-coming North American Dota 2 team has only gotten better, placing second at ESL One Birmingham 2018. Of course, they didn’t exactly fare any better than VGJ.Thunder did against Virtus.Pro — both teams lost 3-0 in the Grand Finals of a Major tournament against the CIS bears –but considering OpTic Gaming’s recent body of work and VGJ.Thunder’s tendency to be a bit too one-dimensional, #thegreenwall should have this series in the bag.

Betting: OpTic Gaming to win at 1.52 odds (ArcaneBet)
