Breaking Down the TI7 Rematch at ESL One Genting Tomorrow

There have been a few, if any, teams who have as much history as the two teams who will meet face to face once again in the Grand Finals of ESL One Genting tomorrow. Many have dubbed the matchup as the modern el clasico, in reference to Natus Vincere and Alliance’s storied rivalry, which is only fitting. After all, it is very rare to see two heavy weights in Dota 2 got at it at the top level of the sport for so long as these two teams have.

Having said that, all eyes will be on the TI7 rematch tomorrow in the Grand Finals of ESL One Genting. Will Newbee finally get their revenge? Or will Team Liquid, once again, get the better of their Chinese Rivals?

Draft Versatility

Truth be told, Newbee have actually played more unique heroes than Team Liquid at 40 to 36, but it’s mostly only because they’ve played 2 more games as well. As far as actual versatility goes, Kuro ‘KuroKy‘ Salehi Takhasomi has a distinct advantage. Case in point, Amer ‘Miracle-‘ Al-Barkawi have played eight different heroes in all of Team Liquid’s games. Not only that, but he’s continued to excel at every hero; Miracle leads all players in the tournament with a ridiculously high KDA of 15.6.

And that’s just Miracle.

Maroun ‘GH‘ Merhej, the sophomore who burst into the Dota 2 scene at DreamLeague Season 6 in 2016, has only gotten better since Team Liquid won TI7. In fact, he’s added even more heroes to his must-ban hero pool. GH now plays a mean Earth Spirit and actually leads all pro players with at least 10 games on the hero with a 17-2 record, which is good for a winrate of 89.47%.

Also, last I heard, this Lasse Aukusti ‘MATUMBAMAN‘ Urpalainen is a pretty good Lycan player, and that the hero is pretty OP right now.

So yeah, outdrafting Team Liquid is a near-impossible task and something that arguably only Team Secret (at full strength) have done before.

Advantage: Team Liquid

Match History

First things first, Team Liquid have a winning record against pretty much every other Dota 2 team. Their latest lineup, after all, are currently the winningest Dota 2 lineup of all time. Even so, the fact that Newbee have yet to take a series against Team Liquid is concerning. Especially since it’s a record that dates back to EPICENTER 2016, where Team Liquid, who then had a slightly different lineup, also beat Newbee, with Hu ‘Kaka‘ Liangzhi and Damien ‘kpii‘ Chok already on the team, in the Grand Finals to take home the trophy.

This is a streak of 7 straight wins in best-of-three matchups over the past two years. If this isn’t telling who’s the heavily favoured team here, I don’t know what is.

Advantage: Team Liquid

Who Will Win ESL One Genting 2018?

At this point, it’s foolish to say that Team Liquid won’t take home their third Minor trophy tomorrow. Especially since Newbee’s Grand Finals berth comes with a caveat that Adrian ‘Fata‘ Trinks was unable to play for Team Secret. Though this isn’t to discount Newbee’s efforts or to knock on Khoo ‘Ohaiyo‘ Chong Xin, but the fact that Newbee barely beat Team Secret, who were playing with a stand-in, says a lot about their chances against Team Liquid tomorrow.

But hey, who knows? Upsets have happened in the past. Just last month, Team Liquid fell 3-0 to Team Secret in the Grand Finals of the DreamLeague Major. So really, it’s anyone’s ball game tomorrow. However, what we’re saying is that if you’re going to take a risk, then at least put your trust on the team that has won most often than not, and that’s Team Liquid.

Verdict: Team Liquid to win at 1.29 odds ; Team Liquid to win at 3-1 odds (GGBET).
